Penn State W-B, Hazleton campuses get OK for 4-year programs &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Expansion will change area campuses' roles from being strictly a feeder
system for State College campusStaff and Wire reports &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; HARRISBURG -- Penn State campuses in Lehman Township and Hazleton were
among 11 campuses approved for expansion on Tuesday. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Education Secretary Eugene W. Hickok approved the expansion of the Penn
State University campuses from two-year to four-year degree granting
institutions, while giving a qualified approval to two others. Citing Hickok's
likely rejection of the proposed expansion of three western Pennsylvania
campuses, Penn State withdrew them from consideration. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The expansions mark a shift from the branch campuses' traditional role as
two-year feeder schools for Penn State's main campus in State College. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "Today's decision opens the door to broad, new opportunities in higher
education for students and communities throughout Pennsylvania," Hickok said.
"At the same time it helps ensure prudent use of the limited taxpayer funds
available for higher education." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Penn State received nearly $281 million in operating funds in the state
budget. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Hickok approved Penn State's request for 11 campuses to offer four-year
baccalaureate degrees: Altoona, Berks-Allentown, DuBois, Fayette, Hazleton,
Mont Alto, Schuylkill (in cooperation with Harrisburg-Capital College),
Shenango, Wilkes-Barre (in Lehman Township), Worthington-Scranton and York. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Penn State Wilkes-Barre campus Executive Officer Tom Winter could not be
reached for comment about the campus' expansion and officials in University
Park did not know details of the plan for the local campuses. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 But last summer officials said the Wilkes-Barre and Hazleton campuses will
offer joint, four-year programs in electromechanical engineering technology.
The Worthington Campus in Scranton plans a four-year business degree. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The state school code requires state-related colleges or universities to
seek the approval of the secretary of education to convert two-year to
four-year institutions. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
