 Leader, who has taken a new position as copy editor. Michele was a valued
member of the community news team. She always tried her best to accommodate

 The Swoyersville Senior Citizens will meet at 1 p.m. today in the Holy
Trinity Church basement on Hughes Street. New members are encouraged to
attend. Club dues for 1997 will be collected through February. The group meets
every other Wednesday. Newly elected officers for 1997 are: President Liz
Zdancewicz; Vice President Betty Leptuck; Secretary Clarabelle Reggie; and
Treasurer Madelene Barush. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

 The Forty Fort Shade Tree Commission will meet at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Jan.
23, in the Council chambers of the Forty Fort Borough Building. Penn State
Urban Forester Vincent Cotrone will be present to answer questions homeowners
may have concerning proper care of their trees. Now is the time to spot dead
limbs that may be a hazard. Applications to prune or remove a tree are
available at the Borough Building along with a publication entitled "Trees for
Streets and Lawns" and is supplied as a public service by UGI. Residents are
not charged for permits. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

 The Plymouth Rotary Club will meet on Thursday, Jan. 23, at Franchella's
Restaurant and Pub, 127 W. Main St., Plymouth. Dinner will be served at 7 p.m.
following a period of membership introspect at 6:30 p.m. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Featured speaker will be John Gavenonis, the Rotary International District
7410 membership and membership development chairman. He will offer a
presentation on the "state of membership" in Rotary International, District
7410, and the Plymouth Rotary Club. Gavenonis will address the drop in
volunteerism and offer a checklist of items a Rotary club should examine to
ensure it remains attractive to new members as well as to current members.
Gavenonis is a member and past president of the Shawnee Rotary organization. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Following his presentation, Gavenonis will introduce Plymouth Rotarians
Jeffrey Bomboy and James Moses who will provide details of the Plymouth Rotary
Club 1997 membership drive. Gavenonis, Bomboy, and Moses serve as the
membership committee for the club. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

 Congratulations to Rabbi Michael Joseph of Temple B'nai B'rith who has been
elected president of the Interfaith Council of the Wyoming Valley through
November 1999. Rabbi Joseph follows immediate past president Monsignor Thomas
Banick of St. Mary's Church and Rabbi James Michaels of Temple Israel. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The Interfaith Council is a group of clergy and lay leaders from diverse
ethnic and religious backgrounds who promote public discussion and action on
social problems facing the Wyoming Valley. In recent years, the Council has
sponsored two programs titled "Not in My Backyard" about the process of
welcoming diverse neighbors into our communities. The Council was also
instrumental in introducing diversity training to local school systems. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Rabbi Joseph has indicated that the theme for Interfaith Council activity
this year will be "welcoming the stranger," an examination of the Valley's
record and current activities welcoming immigrants from other countries. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

 The Plymouth Borough Ambulance Association is conducting its annual
fund-raising drive this week. Residents of the Borough will receive letters
explaining how to make membership donations. If you do not receive a letter,
you may drop off your donation at the Borough Building, Plymouth Public
Library, or Plymouth Fire Company No. 1 during regular working hours. The
membership donation is $15/family and $13/individual. The Ambulance
Association is solely funded by the yearly membership drive and the free-will
donations of various public service groups and individual citizens. All
members of the Unit are volunteers and do not receive compensation for their
long hours of dedicated service to the community. Please make your donation

 The Luzerne Intermediate Unit is hosting a teleconference, "Real
People-Real Jobs," sponsored by the Pennsylvania School Boards Association and
the Pennsylvania Association of Vocational Administrators from 7 to 8:30 p.m.
on Thursday, Jan. 30. The teleconference will be held at the LIU building, 368
Tioga Avenue, Kingston, and is targeted to school directors, superintendents,
vocational-technical educators, principals, guidance counselors, and
representatives of the business community. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The teleconference is part of a two-year cycle of educational programs to
increase awareness of the role that secondary vocational-technical programs
play in developing the work force of today and tomorrow, and to help school
board members become better informed decision makers. There is no fee for this
