Tanjore serves up Indian food with flare &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 You say you're fed up with winter. You want to experience an exotic, warmer
clime but those traditional bugaboos -- time and money -- won't allow for a
trip southThen head for Dunmore and step into Tanjore, the area's only Indian
restaurant. The flavors are exotic enough to satisfy the jaded palate. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Unfortunately, the only warmth will come from the spices that are evident
in almost every dish. Tanjore is located in a former pizza place with a
greenhouse front. Dress warmly and enjoy the cuisine. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 A decor of pale blue and white, silk floral arrangements and softly playing
ragas makes for a setting that really borders on elegant. The service was very
good, with servers quietly attentive and ready to amplify on the generally
good descriptions in the menu. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Be forewarned however: Many dishes are spicy and this is not always
indicated. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Prices are average, so anticipate spending $40 to $50 per couple. Servings
are on the small side and, except for the rice that comes with the entrees,
there are charges for all accompaniments. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 As you might expect, there are plenty of vegetarian dishes to choose from. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The mulligatawny soup is a pale green, rather thin lentil soup with an
unusual but very pleasant aftertaste. Appetizers come with one or two dipping
sauces. One is a mildly spicy, thick, dark delight that seems to have tamarind
as the primary flavoring. The other sauce has lots of minced greenery and is a
bit spicier than the first. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Pakora are small fritters made with a delightful batter, but the vegetables
are non-assertive to the point of blandness. The tasty cashew rolls are spicy
croquettes of potato and chopped cashews. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 For chicken tikka, the meat is marinated in yogurt and spices then grilled.
This was excellent and not at all hot. The chicken in a sausage-like reshmi
kabab is much spicier. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 There are no beef or pork dishes available at Tanjore. Rather, there's lots
of chicken, lamb and a lesser number of seafood dishes. Lamb vindaloo is a
spicy dish of lamb and potatoes in a rich brown gravy. Lamb pasanda has a
milder yogurt based sauce. Both are very tasty. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The sauces are very important part of all dishes here with the quantity on
the order of a stew. A large dish of beautiful yellow, orange and red basmati
rice accompanies all orders and is perfect for soaking up the sauces. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Dhansak murg is dish of chicken simmered in lentils. It was the spiciest
dish we tried. The flavor was robust. The chicken shahzada is cooked in a clay
oven and has a "slow burn." It was very good. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Tandoor jhinga is a grilled shrimp dish that was spicy enough to elicit
comment but not so spicy that a non-heat loving friend didn't devour every
piece. Except for the one I grabbed. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Several Indian breads -- naan, onion kulcha and aloo paratha -- were all
wonderful, puffy flat breads with a silken texture. The first is plain. The
second and third include onions and potato respectively. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Try a yogurt accompaniment called raita. It reminded me a little of the
sour cream and cucumber salads my mother would make. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 If you like hot you must have the mango chutney. It was as much as I could
handle, but this mixture of diced mango, honey and hot pepper is the most
amazing mixture of sweet and spice I have ever had. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The mango lassi -- basically a yogurt shake -- is a perfect beverage choice
for these spicy dishes. For dessert we had gulab jamun. Imagine a baba au rhum
without the rum and much sweeter. It was delicious. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Tanjore is a fine place to eat that I hope will prosper. The food is
excellent and a welcome change from the standard fare that is generally
available. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
