TUNKHANNOCK -- Two new policies were presented to the School Board at its
regular meeting Thursday night. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 A proposed locker search policy was given its first reading. Presented by
Superintendent Kent Kresge, the policy clearly states that students shall have
no expectation of privacy in their lockers. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; The policy encourages students to keep their assigned lockers closed and
locked and gives the students full responsibility for its contents. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The proposed policy further stipulates that the board may authorize its
employees to inspect a student's locker at any time for the purpose of
determining whether the locker is being used for the storage of illegal or
hazardous material. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Locker searches must be announced to the building principal, who must be
present at the time of the search, according to the proposal. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Also presented by Kresge and given its first reading was a proposed drug
awareness policy. Aimed at addressing the problem of drug and alcohol abuse
among school-aged children, the policy states that students are forbidden from
school property while under the influence of such substances. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Laid out in the policy are guidelines for handling students found in
possession of, or distributing illegal substances. A 10-day suspension could
be imposed, an informal hearing held with the student, parents and school
officials to determine disciplinary action, and a referral made to the
superintendent for a formal hearing before the board. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 All of this is in addition to the compliance with a legal and law enforcing
agencies. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Discussion is expected to continue and a second reading of the two policies
to be made at the Board's next regular meeting, slated for Feb. 20. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 In other business: &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The board reported that the School District is the first in the state to be
approved for the new Build Pen Program, which provides the district with
Internet access. All four elementary buildings are expected to be wired for
the service and online in March. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Christine Evans was unanimously appointed as part-time speech teacher at
$17 per hour. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
