 Parents of students at the Valley Elementary School are reminded to keep

unexpectedly, the correct telephone numbers allows parents to be contacted in

 The following Valley Elementary students are winners at the Council level

 DRUMS &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Drums Elementary School &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The PTA of Drums Elementary School will sponsor a presentation on "Raising
a Drug-Free Child" at 7 p.m. on Jan. 28 in the school multi-purpose room. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 A guest speaker from Serento Gardens will discuss the topics How to Raise a
Drug-Free Child, Child Inhalant Abuse, and Kids in Danger/Adults in the Dark. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Child care will be available with children being treated to movies and
snacks. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Refreshments will be served, and the public is encouraged to attend. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Kindergarten registration will be held during the week of Feb. 10 at a day
and time to be announced. Anyone intending to register a child will need the
following information: birth certificate, immunization records, and the pole
number from the nearest PP&amp;L pole or underground box. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

 Students from Arthur Street Elementary School recently received awards in
the PTA's annual Reflections contest. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The categories were literature, visual arts, photography, and music and the
theme was "It Could Happen." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Winners of the contest included: Ronelle Yanuzzi, Christine Dolman, Michael
Kesselring, Kevin Davis, Daniel Corrado, Gina Dougherty, Marissa Miglas,
Briana Stringent, Samantha Yanuzzi, Adam Calarco, Sarah Brobst, Christine
Pierce, Alyssa Clymer, Ashley dePrisco, David Albu, Renita Torella, Ernest
Skorpil, Christine Parlatore, Dean Campbell, Amanda Berger, Scott Elsesser,
Stephen Pyle, Billy Zelinsky, Larry Jancewicz, Darnell Hayes, and Mike

 Bishop Hafey &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Jr./Sr. High School &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 An Open House will be held today from 1-3 p.m. at Bishop Hafey Jr./Sr. High
School. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The public will have the opportunity to meet the administrators, faculty,
students and parent representatives, and receive information about the
school's academic, spiritual, athletic and extracurricular activities.
Guidance and library services will also be available for use by students and
their parents. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Winona Mitchell, daughter of John and Maria Moratto, and a Bishop Hafey
junior, was selected to participate in the District 9 Chorus Festival as a
First Alternate. The festival, sponsored by the Pennsylvania Music Education
Association, was held at Lakeland High School from Jan. 8-ll. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Approximately 40 schools participated in the audition process with an
eight-part chorus of 160 students chosen for the festival. The chorus spent
two days in rehearsal, culminating in a public performance of selections from
various musical periods and composers. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The students also auditioned for the Regional/State Chorus which will be
held in Milton next month. Eighty students were selected for this chorus. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 At Bishop Hafey, Winona is an active member of the Hafey Players, Chorus,
International Club, and the Soccer Team. Her awards include Who's Who Among
American High School Students, National Spanish Achievement Award, and Hafey's
Honor Roll. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 HAZLETON &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Hazleton Junior &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 High School &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The winners of the National PTA Reflections contest have been announced
under the theme, "It Could Happen." Categories include literature, music,

 PTA membership dues can still be paid at a cost of $3 per person. Included
should be the person's name, address, telephone number and the name of the
child's homeroom teacher. A membership card will be sent home with the
student. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Parent volunteers are still needed to help in the HJHS school store. Anyone

 The annual Valentine dance will be held from 8 to 10 p.m. on Feb. 14, with
the crowning ceremony beginning at 7:15 p.m. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

 January Internet sponsors at Heights-Terrace Elementary School are
Pennsylvania National Bank and Hair Creations. Business sponsors are needed

 The multihandicapped support classes at Heights-Terrace are in need of
donations of preschool level toys. These would include stacking blocks, busy
beads, cassette tapes of children's music, board books, and any toys that make

 The awards ceremony for Reflections winners will be held at the
Heights-Terrace PTA meeting at 7 p.m. on Jan. 28. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The "Boxtops For Education" program will continue through March 15. The
school will receive 15 cents for each specially marked boxtop from General
Mills cereal. Anyone wishing to contribute to this project should drop their
boxtops off at the school or send them in with a Heights-Terrace student. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 First grade students are currently working on the publication of their fish
books through the Hawk Press Publishing Center at the school. An authors'
celebration will take place in the future at a date to be announced. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The Heights-Terrace PTA recently purchased Writer's Express and Write
Source 2000 books for students in fourth, fifth and sixth grades. These are
meant to supplement regular textbooks and enhance students' writing skills. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 HAZLETON &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Holy Trinity &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Catholic &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Registration for the 1997-98 school year at Holy Trinity will take place
from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. during the week of Feb. 3 in the school office. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 A $45 registration fee will be accepted at registration. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Students to be enrolled for kindergarten must be five years old by Sept. 1.
The original copy of the birth certificate and the original copy of the
baptismal certificate must be presented at the time of registration. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Kindergarten registrations will be confirmed after the child has completed
the readiness test to be administered at the school. The test will not be
given at registration, but will only be scheduled at that time. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The school will continue its kindergarten program on a half-day schedule.
There will be two sessions. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Registrations for grades one through six will be accepted at that time in
grades where there are openings. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

 Wendy Balko, a kindergarten student at Hazle Elementary School, has won the
Hazleton Area School District's 1997 Holiday Card competition. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Wendy is in Mrs. Nestor's kindergarten class, and is the daughter of
Emmanuel and Anne Balko of Hazleton. Her design included a snowman and
snowflake. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Dr. Geraldine Shepperson, Superintendent of Schools, presented Wendy with a
$50 savings bond at the January School Board meeting. In addition, Wendy's
card will be reproduced by the Graphic Arts Class of the Hazleton Area High
School Career Center under the direction of Mr. Dennis Gould. The cards are
then sent as greetings from the superintendent's office for the holiday
season. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Wendy Balko's winning card was selected from over 600 entries. Each
kindergarten teacher in the district selected two entries for final judging,
which was done by Mrs. Angela Glowatch, art instructor at Hazleton Junior High
School; Dennis Gould, print shop instructor, and his students; along with Dr.
Shepperson. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
