DALLAS -- The Dallas School District has begun advertising for a new
superintendent, and Acting Superintendent Gilbert Griffiths is being
encouraged to apply for the post, the board president said Monday. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Directors officially appointed Griffiths acting superintendent Monday,
ratifying an action taken during a closed meeting Jan. 20. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Board President Ernest Ashbridge Jr. said directors have encouraged
Griffiths to apply for the post, left vacant by the Jan. 18 death of
Superintendent Gerald Wycallis. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Griffiths served as assistant superintendent of curriculum and instruction
the past six years. He previously served as principal of the middle school for
four years. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 In other business, directors discussed whether to return to a sliding scale
to compensate the district's four tax collectors. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 In 1993, directors changed compensation from a sliding scale based on the
amount of taxes collected to a flat rate of $4 per tax bill -- a move that
reduced the salary of tax collectors by about one-third, according to business
manager Charlotte Williams. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Tax collectors filed an appeal, which is awaiting a court decision, board
member John Litz said. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Williams said if the tax collectors win their appeal, the district may have
to pay $20,000-$30,000 for each of the four years, which would be split among
the tax collectors. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Williams said the change to the flat rate was not intended to reduce
salaries. The board thought the flat fee was more equitable since it takes as
much time to process a $3,000 tax bill as a $300 bill, she said. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
