NANTICOKE -- Environmental activists and members of the business community
will meet Saturday on the campus of Luzerne County Community College to talk
about ways to improve outdoor recreation. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Luzerne County Commissioner Tom Makowski asked the Greater Wilkes-Barre
Chamber of Business and Industry to arrange the session after being approached
by several environmental groups with ideas to improve the area's outdoor
activities. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; "There are numerous groups with good ideas. We want to see where we can
work together," Makowski said. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Todd Vonderheid, spokesman for the chamber, said he expects about 70 people
to attend the day-long brainstorming session, entitled "The Luzerne County
Greenway and Open Space Visioning Session." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Information gathered during the day will be passed along to the Luzerne
County Tourism Promotion Agency, Makowski said, adding that he hopes
increasing recreational activities in the area will help attract new
businesses. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Makowski said the meeting will help county officials decide which projects
to fund. He also hopes it will allow various environmental groups to focus
their energy on specific projects. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Judy Rimple, president of the Anthracite Scenic Trails Association, said
she's encouraged to see the county take an interest in the scenic aspect of
the county. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Rimple said she'll pitch a plan to expand her group's rails-to-trails
activity at the meeting. "We're in the process of developing the Back Mountain
trail; we'll begin construction this year on the first mile. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The planned 20-mile trail will begin alongside state Route 309 in Luzerne
and run to Noxen, where it will connect with another trail, Rimple said. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The free session will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. It will be held in room 10
of the Educational Conference Center at LCCC. A lunch will be provided by the
county. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
