Many elementary school students at Wilkes-Barre Academy have been
neglecting their science books lately. But that doesn't mean they aren't
learning. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Ed Grivensky, a science teacher at the small private elementary school,
recently adopted a new approach to educating his students. Hands-on experience
has become the main theme. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; This inquiry-based science method involves learning by doing, rather than
just reading textbooks and listening to lectures. The school orders kits that
contain materials the students can use to test scientific theories and observe
their effects. They still use textbooks, but only to provide background for
the experiments they do. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "I enjoy it much more than the book," said 12 year-old Santina Sperling. "I
like the experiments, and it's easier to learn because you're working the
experiment out instead of just reading about it." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Another advantage of inquiry-based science is that it's a cooperative
effort. "I like to work with other people," said sixth-grader Mary Kosek.
"When we just used the books, we didn't get to work in groups." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 An example is a project on electricity where groups of kids worked
together, using batteries, wires and light bulbs to learn about how
electricity flows. "It's better because they see it work instead of just
telling them," said Grivensky. "It's a kind of discovery method." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The hands-on idea was suggested to Grivensky by James Slock, a biology
professor at King's College. Slock, who has a daughter attending Wilkes-Barre
Academy, became aware of the teaching methods while attending a seminar two
years ago in Seattle. He was immediately impressed. Now his goal is to
introduce the program to all the elementary schools in the area. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 As a college science professor, Slock said he sees firsthand that many
students are getting to college without much in-depth experience. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
