WILKES-BARRE -- One way or another, the former Klein Auto Parts building
will serve as the county morgue. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Luzerne County officials bought the building at North River and Reichard
streets two years ago. They said they were going to build a state-of-the-art
morgue for Coroner Dr. George Hudock Jr. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Now Quad Three Group Inc., an architectural and engineering firm studying
the county's long-range space needs, is expected to recommend the building be
used as a central repository for older county records, including deeds, wills,
civil suits and all other documents the state requires the county to keep.
Such a facility is sometimes known as a morgue. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "We're looking at records that we need to maintain but are not used on a
daily basis," said county Engineer Jim Brozena. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Current records will remain housed in various departments in the county
courthouse on River Street, said Gene Klein, chief clerk/administrator. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The county bought the brick masonry Klein building from the estate of
Howard Klein, who is no relation to Gene Klein, for $33,000. At the time,
officials wanted to gut the building and install rooms for performing
autopsies, examining specimens and refrigerating bodies. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 But then the county began talks with Wyoming Valley Health Care System,
which at the time was preparing to transfer many of the functions of Nesbitt
Memorial Hospital, in Kingston, to Wilkes-Barre General Hospital. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 So Nesbitt had the room. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "The decision somewhat changed," said Brozena. "It's a lot easier to start
with a hospital environment than it is with an auto parts environment." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Hudock now performs autopsies at Nesbitt, rather than Mercy Hospital or
Kniffen Funeral Home, where he used to perform them. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Brozena said using the Klein building eventually will save money because
the county rents space to store certain records. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
