Luzerne County officials act according to nature &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 After 200 years of despoilment by culm banks, strip mines, garbage dumping
and sprawl, the natural beauty of Luzerne County at last may be getting its
dueAnd the renewal and reclamation starts today. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; The Luzerne County Greenway and Open Space Visioning Session will be held
today at Luzerne County Community College. Participants will include
representatives from activist organizations such as the Anthracite Scenic
Trails Association and the Greenways Coalition, as well as local Chamber of
Commerce officials and other interested groups. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 But those people have met before. Here's what makes today's event special:
For the first time, this loosely organized movement will be meeting with the
blessing of the Luzerne County Commissioners. Commissioner Tom Makowski helped
organize the meeting, after noticing the variety of preservation projects
already underway. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 And the commissioners hold the power to make the conservationists' dreams
come true. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The activists seek progressive goals in the truest sense of the word. They
look at the weedy strips along the valley's miles of abandoned railroads and
see bike trails. They look at the summit of Wilkes-Barre Mountain, that lofty
perch high atop one of America's most beautiful valleys, and see nature
trails, scenic overlooks and interpretive signs. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 They look at the fields and forests that give character to the Back
Mountain, and see gamelands and preserves and parks. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Parks are not Democratic issues, and trails are not Republican issues.
Instead they are Pennsylvania issues, as timeless and bipartisan as the
Liberty Bell. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 They generate affection rather than controversy, and good will rather than
rage. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 And in many ways they're the key to our county's growth and health. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Congratulations to the workshop participants, and to the organizers for
their leadership skills. Congratulations especially to Commissioner Makowski.
Although the value of parks and natural beauty may seem obvious, convincing
local officials of that can be incredibly hard. The commissioner deserves
great credit for listening to as well as hearing his constituents, and for
suggesting today's meeting to give their views even more weight. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
