 BELL ATLANTIC CHANGES NUMBER: &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Bell Atlantic residential and business customers soon will have to dial a
few more digits to reach the company's repair service departmentBeginning
March 15, customers will call 1-800-275-2355 instead of 611. Business
customers who call numbers other than 611 are not affected by the change. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Bell Atlantic attributed the change to growing competition in local
telephone service and the need to ensure customers can reach the company
easily. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The company will continue to answer customers' calls for repair service 24
hours a day, seven days a week. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Until March 15, callers can reach the repair service by calling 611. After
that date, people who call that number will hear a recording directing them to
call the 800 number. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Customers will receive information about the change in their phone bills
during March and April. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 BANK OFFICES OPEN ON HOLIDAY: &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Mellon Bank Corp. announced that its seven supermarket offices in
northeastern Pennsylvania will be open for business on Presidents Day, Monday,
Feb. 17. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The offices are among 76 Mellon operates in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and
Delaware. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 In 1997, Mellon's supermarket offices also will be open on Columbus Day
(Oct. 13) and Veterans Day (Nov. 11). &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 CORNING PICKS N.Y. SITE: &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Corning Inc. has decided on a site for its new optical components factory
-- and it's not in Lackawanna County. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The company, based in Corning, N.Y., announced Wednesday it will recommend
to its board of directors to build the 200,000-square-foot facility in Erwin,
N.Y. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 When completed, the new plant will increase the company's manufacturing
capacity of passive optical devices used in communications and video and
sensor systems. The company expects that the plant will employ 1,000 people. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Corning announced Friday it had narrowed its location for the plant to four
sites, including a 40-acre parcel in Scott Township, north of Scranton. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

 TASTY INCREASES: &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Tasty Baking Co. of Philadelphia has reported fourth quarter 1996 sales of
$37 million, a 7.4 percent increase over fourth quarter 1995 sales of $34.5
million. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Net income for the 13 weeks ended Dec. 28, 1996, was $2.2 million or $.35
per share compared to $2.2 million or $.35 per share for the 13 weeks ended
December 30, 1995. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The fourth quarter 1995 included the amortization of the gain on the sale
of company routes, which increased net income by $989,000 or $.16 per share.
The comparable net income for 1995 was $1.2 million or $.19 per share. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 For the 52 weeks ended Dec. 28, net sales were $146.7 million, which
represents a 3.4 percent increase compared to net sales of $141.8 million for
the 52 weeks ended Dec. 30, 1995. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Net income for the 52 weeks was $6.3 million or $1.02 per share, up from $5
million or $.82 per share for 1995 after adjustments. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 DOW NEARS 7,000: &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The Dow Jones industrial average shot toward 7,000 Wednesday as the stock
market rallied into the close. A strong earnings report from a key technology
concern helped stem the recent profit-taking in that sector. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The Dow finished with a gain of 103.52 points to close at 6,961.63. It was
the fifth biggest point-gain for the Dow, bringing its gain for the year to
nearly 8 percent. It closed above 6,000 on Oct. 14, 1996. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Broad-market indexes also rallied during the last two hours of trading,
with the Standard &amp; Poor's 500 list breaking above the 800-mark for the first
time. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The advance came without any significant developments on the economic
outlook and despite a weak day in the bond market, where interest rates rose
slightly as prices edged lower after a less-than-enthusiastic auction of new
U.S. Treasury debt. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "There's no news really to account for this type of behavior. The market is
very spirited," said Alan Ackerman, senior vice president at Fahnestock &amp; Co.,
calling the advance a follow-through to Tuesday's late burst of buying. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
