 JENKINS TOWNSHIP &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Firefighters seek volunteers &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Volunteer firefighters of Jenkins Township will conduct an election for
1998 &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 officers at 7 p.m. Jan. 10 at the fire station in the Port Griffith section
of the townshipThe annual Firefighter's Buffet will follow the election for
all members, including life members in attendance. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Volunteers are urged to attend meetings held on the second Monday of each
month. Any resident interested in becoming a volunteer can contact any of the
following members: Chief Training Officer and Communications Director Don
Sartin, Fire Chief Albert Savakinas, Captain John Chiumento, Casey Donahue,
Jimmy Nardone or township police officer Jimmy Noone. Constable Bill Dillon is
news director for the volunteers. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

 Special train event at Steamtown site &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Friends of Thomas the Tank Engine, a special holiday event featuring a
full-sized operating replica of Thomas the Tank Engine seen on PBS' Shining
Time Station, will be held today at Steamtown National Historic Site,
Scranton. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Hours will be 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is $6 for adults, $5 for senior
citizens (62 and older), $2 for ages 5-15, and free for ages 4 and younger. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 There will be appearances by Thomas' friend Sir Topham Hatt, garden-scale
trains, free face painting, coloring activities and videos. In addition, the
park's normal activities will be offered: History and Technology Museums,
Steel and Steam theatre show, train ride, backshop tours and the annual
Festival of Trees. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Seat belt safety offered at library &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Children ages 2 to 8 are invited to meet "Seat Belt Sam," a friendly dragon
who teaches kids about seat belt safety, at 2:30 p.m. Jan. 18 at the
Lackawanna County Children's Library. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 A gift will be given to each child who checks out a least three library
items. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Registration is free, but limited. Those wishing to register must possess

 Area school district offers GED test &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Tunkhannock Area School District will administer a GED test on Jan. 9 and
10, at Roslund Elementary School, with snow dates set for Jan. 16-17. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Candidates must be at least 18 years old and must be present for both
sessions. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Session hours: 5-9 p.m. Jan. 9; and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Jan. 10. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 On Friday, participants will need to bring a photo identification card,
proof of age and his/her Social Security number. The cost of the two-day test
is $40. The test is limited to 30 participants, with those attending GED
classes guaranteed a seat. Others will be serviced on a first-come,
first-served basis. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Special accommodations are available in testing for persons with documented
physical and learning disabilities, but arrangements must be made in advance
by calling Dr. Patricia Sample at 836-8266. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Candidates are also reminded to bring a lunch on Saturday. For further

 New sanitation stickers due &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Sanitation stickers for 1998 are on sale at the West Wyoming Borough
Building, 464 W. Eighth St., between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. weekdays. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Cost of the stickers remains the same- $90 regular, with a $5 rebate for
senior citizens. There is a three-bag limit. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Stickers also may be purchased through the mail. As an added convenience to
residents, Visa, MasterCard and MAC cards will be accepted for payment at the
Borough Building. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

 Registration meeting for Cub Scout Pack 32 &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The Jewish Community Center of Wyoming Valley will hold a sign-up meeting
of Pack 32 at 3:45 p.m. Jan. 11. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 All boys in first through fifth grade are invited to attend with their
parents. The boys will have the opportunity to play games and learn about the
