 VALMONT EMERGENCY EXIT PLANNED: CAN DO officials, responding to requests of &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Valmont Industrial Park tenants, have begun work on an emergency exit from
the parkThe exit would be used in the event that main roads into and from the
park are not accessible. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Preliminary plans call for an exit road to run from the Jaycee Drive
cul-de-sac south along Interstate 81 to Route 924. When surveying work is
complete, the Valmont Park Association and property owners will be contacted
about required rights-of-way, according to Frank Zeske, CAN DO director of
operations. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

 APPLE STOCK SOARS ON PROFIT NEWS: Apple Computer Inc. sent its stock
soaring 20 percent Tuesday by saying it would report a surprise quarterly
profit, helped by cost cuts and strong demand for its new computers. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Apple predicted it would earn more than $45 million in its fiscal first
quarter, which ended last month. Wall Street analysts had expected a loss of
$10 million. The financial results are due out next Wednesday. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Apple has been struggling to regain a shrinking market for Macintosh
machines and return to profitability after losing more than $1.8 billion
during the past two years. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The company's stock jumped following the announcement, rising $3.06 to
$18.93 per share in late afternoon trading on the Nasdaq Stock Market. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 In the year-ago quarter, Apple lost $120 million on $2.1 billion in sales.
The company has not reported a profit since the summer of 1996. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Last fall, Apple introduced faster Power PC computers. The Macintosh users,
resellers and software developers in the audience cheered Jobs' announcement. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Apple chief financial officer Fred Anderson said that demand was
unexpectedly high for Apple's more profitable machines. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 But analysts cautioned that much of the profit was due to steep
cost-cutting, including thousands of layoffs last year, and didn't represent a
fundamental revival in Apple's business. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 UNISYS TO REDEEM NOTES EARLY: Unisys Corp. said Tuesday that as part of an
aggressive program to reduce debt and interest expense it is calling for early
redemption all of its $198 million of 9 percent senior notes due on July 15,
1998. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The notes will be redeemed on Feb. 5 at par plus accrued interest. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Unisys Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer Lawrence A. Weinbach
said the early redemption is part of a continuing program he announced when he
joined the company in September to reduce the company's $2.3 billion in debt
by $1 billion by the year 2000. "We have already taken major steps towards
this goal by converting more than $600 million in notes to common stock in the
fourth quarter of 1997." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Unisys said the two prior note conversions to equity will save more than
$50 million in cash and interest expense annually. The early redemption of the
9 percent senior notes will save approximately $8 million in additional

 PROFIT WORRIES SEND DOW DOWN:Stocks fell Tuesday, led by banking and energy
shares, as investors remained fixated on company profit worries and found
little solace in another record-setting drop by a key interest rate. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The Dow Jones industrial average closed with a loss of 72.74 at 7,906.25
after sliding to a deficit of nearly 100 points late in the heavily traded
session. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Broad-market indicators also posted sizable losses amid the nagging
uncertainties over whether the barrage of fourth-quarter profit reports
beginning next week will reveal any major damage from the economic crisis in
Asia. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The profit concerns were most evident on Tuesday in the financial sector,
which fell sharply following reports that Merrill Lynch had downgraded
Citicorp, and trimmed its profit forecasts for Chase Manhattan, BankAmerica,
and BankBoston. &nbsp;&nbsp;
