MOOSIC- From the mound at Lackawanna County Stadium, someone is going to
take a deep breath, wind up, and make a pitch to become a millionaire this
year. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 And it won't be a member of the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Red Barons. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Instead, all eyes will be on one lucky Red Barons fan selected to compete
in the Million Dollar Toss, to be held after Scranton/Wilkes-Barre's Sept. 6
home game with Pawtucket. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 During each of the Red Barons' first 70 home games this season, one seat
occupied by a season ticket holder (or his or her guest) will be randomly
selected and entered into a final drawing. From those 70 names, one will be
chosen to make a pitch for $1 million. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The finalist will have six pitches to strike out an imaginary batter. To do
that, he or she must throw three strikes from the pitcher's mound through a
target measuring 12 inches high by 17 inches wide set up at home plate. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 If three of those pitches go through the target cleanly, the participant
will win yearly checks of $25,000 for 40 years, beginning in 1998 and ending
in 2037. That cash prize is just part of an awards package that will include a
one-year shoe contract,; a one-year glove contract, a one-year bat contract, a
Red Barons uniform and workout opportunities. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The promotion is limited to season ticket holders. Former or current
professional baseball or softball players and those who participated on high
school or college baseball or softball teams within the past five years are
all ineligible. In the event a randomly selected nightly contestant is
ineligible, that person may designate a member of his or her immediate family
who is eligible to participate. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The event is a takeoff of a recent promotion held at the Sugar Bowl, where
a halftime contestant won a million dollars by throwing a football through a
target. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "We all saw what kind of excitement that created," said Rick Muntean, who
was officially named the Red Barons general manager last month after serving
as interim general manager following Bill Terlecky's departure early last
season. "We want the same excitement around here." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The promotion, which is part of Scranton/Wilkes-Barre's 10th anniversary,
is being underwritten by SCA Promotions of Dallas, Texas, which is one of the
largest contest underwriters in the country. The contest policy will cost the
Red Barons $32,000, a tab that Muntean said is close to being picked up by a
sponsor. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "This is not a one-year wonder," said Muntean, who's hoping to make the
contest a yearly tradition. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The idea was formed, in part, to boost sagging attendance figures at
Lackawanna County Stadium. Last year, the Barons drew an all-time low of
441,410 fans, set the all-time single-game attendance low four times, watched
attendance decline for the fifth consecutive season and failed to attract
500,000 fans to the ballpark for the fourth consecutive year. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "I'd like to give somebody a million so we can sell tickets next year,"
Muntean said. "You'll want to come to games in April and May." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The plan may be working already. Muntean estimates the Red Barons already
count more than 2,600 season ticket holders for the upcoming season, up from
the 2,500 fan base they attracted last year. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "We have a debt service that has to be met every year," said Bill Jenkins,
the new chairman of the Lackawanna County Stadium Authority. "Attendance is
revenue. The stadium has always covered its debt service. We just wanted to
make sure we put the skids to a drop in anymore revenue." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 To help with that, the Stadium Authority hired Muntean at its December
meeting, putting an end to a search for Terlecky's replacement, hired Bob
Donovan as a full-time sales manager, and added two new members to the Red
Barons sales staff. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "We're going to be real aggressive in marketing the Red Barons and selling
the Red Barons," said Muntean, who's hoping to move Scranton/Wilkes-Bar
