Royals feel the absence of playmaker &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 By the end of an 86-70 loss at Susquehanna on Thursday night, the
University of Scranton thought it might have found its futureBut it might not
be as bright as the Royals would like to think. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Freshman point guard Jonathan Rohl had enough impressive moments to gain
the starting nod for tonight's 7:30 game with Nyack at the Long Center. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 But the absence of the glue to what the Royals were hoping would be a
rebound season was noticeable. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 From the day he walked onto the floor, former Bishop O'Hara star Al
Callejas gave Scranton the look of a real contender this season. He was the
true point guard the Royals had been missing for a few years now, and if
nothing else, provided the team with an extension of the coach on the floor. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 But Callejas was ruled academically ineligible on Tuesday to play
basketball, a victim of Scranton's high standards in the classroom, and is on
academic probation for the rest of this semester. Behind him, Scranton roared
to a 7-3 start and remains 3-0 in the Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom
League after two successive losing seasons. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Without him, the Royals tried letting natural off-guards Mike Reno and
Jason Fisher bring the ball upcourt Thursday, and had little success with
breaking Susquehanna's press before finally settling into a flow with Rohl. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "I thought they did very well by pressing us," said Scranton coach Bob
Bessoir. "You saw the result." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 It didn't leave the Royals smiling. Scranton committed 20 turnovers and
watched Susquehanna swipe 10 steals as the Royals' offense looked out of sync
at times, then wore down as the game went on. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "We played hard," Bessoir said. "We didn't play intelligently." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The loss of Callejas, who remains at Scranton but isn't expected to rejoin
the Royals this season, opened a Pandora's box of problems for the team. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Bessoir spent Thursday barking offensive plays from the bench- as he was
forced to do the past few years- taking his concentration away from other
areas of the game. Scranton's depth in the guard rotation was lacking a
little, and it cost the Royals when Susquehanna went on a 16-4 run to break
open a 61-60 game during the final 11 minutes. And until Rohl showed signs of
becoming a steadying force in the second half, Scranton really had no answer
to Susquehanna's pressure style. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "I can't blame the kids, they were put in a situation they had to play
with," Bessoir said. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The Royals just have to hope it was just a case of taking too long to find
a replacement for Callejas. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Or their time at the top of the Freedom League will be running out quickly. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

 BIG LETDOWN: Once again, College Misericordia knocked heads with Wilkes and
came away dizzy. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 With a commanding 79-61 victory over the Cougars on Wednesday, Wilkes
improved to 10-1 in the all-time series between the two, leaving Misericordia
searching for the area respect it's been seeking for awhile. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The two teams last met in the 1991 Laurel Line Tournament (an 82-67 Wilkes
victory) and Misericordia was hoping to use Wednesday's battle as a
springboard to respectability among area teams. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Instead, Wilkes rolled off the game's first 11 points, then coasted to an
18-point victory. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "This is a big game because it's a local game," said Misericordia coach
Dave Martin. "I'm not sure we were ready to play. We struggled at the
offensive end. We didn't get into anything, didn't run anything." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 In their defense, the Cougars are in a rebuilding season with just two
experienced players this year, and would have loved to challenge Wilkes when
they had such scoring stars as Jay McGovern and Joe Harvey during the last few
seasons. And to their credit, the Cougars played hard, never let the Wilkes
lead reach 20 points, and actually created some interesting moments by cutting
their deficit to 59-54 with 8:23 to play. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 But for the most part, they didn't produce enough to earn a label as one of
the area's elite teams. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "I'm disappointed," Martin said. "When you don't play to your potential,
that's what's disappointing." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

 WARMING UP: After a break of more than a month, the Wilkes women's team
will hit the floor again with a flurry beginning Monday with a game at
Albright. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 After that, the Lady Colonels- who haven't played since Dec. 6- will go
through a stretch that will tell them if they're a serious playoff contender.
From Jan. 15 through 31, they'll face Freedom League opponents King's, Drew,
Delaware Valley, Scranton, Lycoming and FDU-Madison. And the makeup of a
snowout with Allentown Dec. 10 has been scheduled for Jan. 29 at the Marts
Center. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
