It certainly has been strange weather we've been having this past week.
More like the spring than January. I spent most of last weekend in Maryland,
where the weather was even nicer- sunny and very warm. I enjoy visiting
Maryland, &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 there are so many different stores to shop, Target, Belk, and Peebles &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Department Stores, not to mention all the different grocery stores. I have
a special fondness for some Southern foods, grits, hominy, red beans and
riceDifferent foods help to spice up things a bit. Hopefully some of these
events in the Greater Nanticoke Area will help to spice up your winter ... &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

 The Altar and Rosary Society of St. Francis Parish, Nanticoke, will hold
their meeting at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 13 in the Parish Center. Plans for the
upcoming annual Spaghetti Dinner will be discussed. All are asked to attend.
New members are always most welcome. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

 A Bereavement Meeting will be held at 7 p.m. Jan. 14 at the St. Francis
Parish Center, Nanticoke. Anyone who has experienced the loss of a loved one,

 The Mercy Special Care Hospital Auxiliary distributed poinsettias to
patients during the Christmas season. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

 Alden Rod and Gun Club will meet at 7 p.m. Jan. 14 at Ruby's Inn. Fish and
game awards will be made for the upcoming smoker to be held in February,
reservations will be accepted at the meeting. Cost will be $10 for members. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

 K.M. Smith Elementary School PTA will hold their monthly meeting at 6:30
p.m. Jan. 20 at the cafeteria at the John S. Fine High School. Terry Martin
will preside. Second grade mothers will hostess. All are welcome to attend. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

 The Nanticoke Conservation Club will sponsor its Second Annual Ice Fishing
Derby at Moon Lake Park from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Jan. 24, 1998. There will be
food and prizes. Adults $5. Children under 16 years free. Thin ice/rain date
will be Feb. 7, 1998. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

 An oratorical contest and essay contest is being conducted by the American
Legion District 12 for high school students who are attending schools in the
District 12 area. School officials and guidance counselors have been notified
and invited to participate in these contests. It is requested that they assist
students with the necessary arrangements and prerequisites. The orations must
be on some phase of the American Constitution, emphasizing the duties and
obligations of a citizen to the United States government. This must be the
original effort of each student with limits of 8 to 10 minutes. University
scholarships of $18,000, $16,000 and $14,000 will be awarded on the national
level finalists for first, second and third place winners. There will also be
awards for competition on the local and district levels. Rules are available
in the guidance offices of schools for those who wish to participate. It must
be noted that the deadline for notification of individual school winners is
Jan. 15. The chairman for District 12 American Legion is Ted Swigonski. He
will be assisted by commanders and adjutants of the local posts. District
finals will be held on Jan. 28 at the Plains American Legion with further
details given when the contestant is registered. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

 Nanticoke Chapter No. 174, Order of the Eastern Star entertained Peggy A.
Johnson, worthy matron, and Earl L. Johnson, worthy patron, at their Annual
Christmas Dinner Party held at Lacey's Catering in Nanticoke. The occasion
also marked the birthday anniversary of Mrs. Johnson. Invocation was offered
by Judith Gimble, chapter chaplain. A skit was presented by Mary Lee Bowditch,
Sandra Loomis and Christine Barall. Paulette Shuman entertained with vocal
selections and there was group singing of Christmas carols with Mrs. Shuman as
song leader. Peggy Johnson was presented a birthday gift and Earl Johnson a
Christmas gift from the officers of the chapter. Remarks were made by the
honored guests. There was an exchange of gifts among those present and
distributed by Santa (Albert Decker, associate patron). Table centerpieces
were awarded to Mary Ann Jesse, Sharon Robey, Dorothy Bray, past matron, Nancy
Worke, past matron, Sue Kocker and Irene Cooper. Felt poinsettia napkin rings
were given as favors. Mrs. Arden Decker, associate matron, was chairman,
assisted by Mary Lee Bowditch, conductress and Sandra Loomis, associate
conductress. Following a prayer by Judith Gimble, the party was closed with a
prayer and the Mizpah benediction. A family-style dinner was served. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

 St. Stanislaus Parish, 38 W. Church St., Nanticoke, will host the Sacred
Heart Mission Group's "Divine Mercy Reparation Services" at 3 p.m. Jan. 18.
Announcements begin at 2:45 p.m. The Rev. Joseph Kakareka is host pastor.
Monthly services include Sunday liturgy (fulfilling the Sunday obligation),
Divine Mercy Holy Hour, Intercessory Rosary, Reparation Prayer during the
Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament, and concludes with Eucharistic Procession
and Benediction. The Mission Group is comprised of members of parishes
throughout the Scranton, Allentown and Passaic (Byzantine Rite) Dioceses. The

 Luzerne County Community College will offer the course "Seminar In Travel
Geography, Domestic" this spring. The course is designed to help travel agents
learn more about the geography of the United States, Canada, Mexico, the
Caribbean and South America. The class will be held on Wednesdays, beginning
Jan. 28 through May 13, from 6:30 to 9:20 p.m. LCCC will hold registration for
the spring semester on Tuesday and Wednesday, Jan. 13 and 14 from 9 a.m. to
