River Watch invites readers to help realize Valley's natural potential &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 As Wyoming Valley begins 1998, the Susquehanna River Watch has undertaken
another bold initiative to reestablish pride, dignity, health and culture in
beautiful and historic Wyoming ValleySince 1982, the River Watch has been
involved in many riverfront pro jects including the Wilkes-Barre Riverfront
Parks, Kingston Riverbend Park, Pittston Riverfront Project and the George
Washington Treaty Belt mural at Nesbitt Park. Our latest project will be the
development of a greenway trail from Duryea to Wilkes-Barre. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; The greenway trail will provide opportunities for hiking, biking, horseback
riding, environmental education, nature study tours for the physically
challenged and river access for fishing and boating. The trail will preserve
many unique natural landscape scenes along the beautiful Susquehanna River. In
a valley where heart disease is double the national average this trail will
help build healthy hearts and attitudes within the community. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The greenway trail from Duryea to Wilkes-Barre will be the critical link
between the Lackawanna Corridor trail system and the Army Corps Trail System
associated with the new levee pro ject in Wyoming Valley. Once the trail is
completed it will tie Wyoming Valley into the Statewide Anthracite Tidewater
Trail system. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 We plan to develop a Native American theme for the trail and hope to
develop a Native American museum in Pittston to complement the trail. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Over the last two years, Peace Ambassador Vernon Jimerson from the Seneca
Nation and Chief Paul Waterman of the Onondaga Nation have participated in
several cultural events in Wyoming Valley, re-establishing the Iroquois ties
to the valley. They have pledged their support for the trail pro ject and
American River Heritage status for the Susquehanna River. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The trail project will also help realize a vision of Col. Timothy
Pickering, a member of George Washington's cabinet and resident of Wyoming
Valley. Pickering was chief peace ambassador for Washington and helped forge a
lasting peace treaty with the Iroquois nation, that was known as the
Canandaigua or Pickering Treaty. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
