Fun fires their imaginations &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Pushing, poking and prodding, four youngsters worked to transform lumps of
clay into birds, apple trees, a raccoon and even Johnny Appleseed himself"It's
fun and it's messy," 8-year-old Greg D'Uva of Waverly said, gleefully
explaining why the activity pleased his boyish heart. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Tuesday afternoon art class at the Waverly Community House was over, but
Greg and three friends stayed a bit later to show visitors what they're
creating. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "This is additive art," instructor Steve Colley said as 12-year-old Dan
D'Uva added a pterodactyl-like bird to the panel and 8-year-old Eric Wolk used
a small dental instrument to create fruit-like shapes among the tree leaves. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 During a workshop Saturday at the Pennsylvania Anthracite Heritage Museum,
Colley will lead children in a more challenging kind of art- subtractive. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 It's more difficult because- once you've chipped away a piece of something
hard like plaster- you can't put it back together if you decide you took too
much. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 At the workshop, which is geared for grades three through seven, the
students will view sculptures crafted from coal by the late Wilkes-Barre
artist C. Edgar Patience. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Colley will explain how Patience took very large pieces of anthracite- some
of them weighing as much a ton or two- and chiseled and whittled, subtracting
as he worked, until he formed the image he wanted. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 His creations include a tiny village, and George Washington's head and
shoulders, which are on display at the museum. Other items, such as a fierce
bulldog, and the smiling face of a woman who looks like she knows a secret,
are part of private collections. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 After the children have been inspired by Patience's art- which sparkles and
helps people realize why coal was sometimes called "black diamonds"- the
workshop will allow them to do their own carving. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 They won't use coal- that would be too difficult to manipulate- but plaster
of Paris that Colley will mix, tint black and shape to resemble lumps of
anthracite. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Workshop participants will use safe cutting tools such as butter knives to
carve their artwork, which they'll be able to take home. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "We're trying to foster creativity," said Colley, who holds a master's of
fine arts degree from Parsons School of Design in New York City and is an
adjunct professor at both Marywood University and the University of Scranton. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Class size will be limited to about 20 students, and reservations should be
made by calling the museum. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Bob Prosperi of the museum staff said the workshop should spark the
imaginations of the young people, who might have thought that sculptures can
be made from granite or marble- but not coal. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "Art," he said, "doesn't have to be restricted." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
