Martin Luther King Jr. was born on this date in 1929 and assassinated in
1968, &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 when he was only 37 years old. In his too-short life he became one of the
outstanding black leaders in this country, arousing both blacks and whites to
protest racial discrimination, poetry and war. In 1964, he was awarded the &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Nobel peace prize in recognition of his espousal of nonviolent resistance
as a means of protestWe can also thank him for being the cause of our only
January holiday. Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday is one of those holidays
that is celebrated on a specified Monday, much like Presidents' day, Labor Day
or Veterans Day. They never changed Independence Day- probably because some of
us might object to celebrating Fourth of July on the second, third or fifth. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 So on the third Monday of January we get a little break from winter tedium
with a holiday. Even the post office and banks will be closed on Monday. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 We might have had a January holiday a little sooner if anyone had thought
of it. Benjamin Franklin and Horatio Alger were born on Jan. 17. Robert E.
Edgar Allen Poe, and the painter, Paul Cezanne, were born on Jan. 19. Any of
those birthdays might have been worth celebrating. But it is Martin Luther
King Jr. whom we honor this month, and the honor is well deserved. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

are invited to compete. There is no entry fee and prizes are awarded in each

 Parents of Westmoreland Elementary School students are invited to "Chat
with the Principal" from 10 to 10:45 a.m. on Jan. 22, in the school cafeteria.
This monthly chat has been initiated by principal Kathleen McCarthy, to
provide parents with the opportunity to share their ideas and concerns about
school programs and policies. Parents may use the school playground for
parking. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
