Black walnut tough nut to crack, but it's worth it &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Many an attempt to extricate the black walnut nut from the black walnut
shell has ended in sore-handed failureIt is the shell from hell. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; This many-chambered, extremely hard casing thwarts many a would-be
nutcracker. But, AH-HA!! I have a method that works well with a minimum of
blood, sweat, stain and tears. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 STEP 1- Husk the nut. WEAR IMPERMEABLE GLOVES. Some people just drive their
cars over them. I use a hammer to smack the husk sharply, and then peel the
nut out, tossing it into a bucket of water. Any that float are discarded. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 STEP 2- Drain and spread nuts out to cure in a dry area for several weeks.
Black walnuts that have not been cured taste awful. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 STEP 3- Using a table-mounted vise, place nut in the vise with its "seam"
parallel to the vise jaws. WEARING GOGGLES, tighten the vise until the shell
splits open. If you need extra leverage, slip a length of pipe over the vise
handle and tap with a rubber mallet. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 STEP 4- Once the nut has cracked, dislodge the meat by shaking or prying.
With this method, the nutmeats will usually come out in four neat quarters-
nothing like the black walnut "dust" for sale in supermarkets. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
