Help blaze a new trail from Duryea to W-B &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Imagine whizzing down a smooth bike path on a summer's day. On your right,
the &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Susquehanna River tranquilly rolling south. On your left, an unbroken wall
of trees, their leaves wafting in the breezeEight-and-a-half gorgeous
riverfront miles from Duryea to Wilkes-Barre. No cars to cut you off. No curbs
to slow you down. Just other bikers, joggers and strollers and a perfect
afternoon. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 That beautiful trail is already there beneath some aging track, moldering
trash and overgrowth. And you can help uncover it. The work begins tomorrow. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Susquehanna River Watch will meet at 7 p.m. Monday at the Luzerne County
West Side Annex, 2009 Wyoming Avenue, Forty Fort, to further its plans for a
rails-to-trails conversion for 8 1/2 miles of abandoned bed along the east
side of the river. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 If you've ever coveted the running/biking paths on former railbeds
elsewhere- the 10 miles that cross York County come to mind- then you should
be at the River Watch meeting. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The River Watch has already applied for a $50,000 government grant to draw
up a master plan for the trail, parts of which are already clear and available
for recreational use. The Pennsylvania National Guard has expressed an
interest in helping with the work, according to River Watch Chairman Gerald
Reisinger. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 What's needed now are the heads and hearts and hands of people ready to
contribute their time. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "You come to the meeting and just get involved and start using the trail,"
said Reisinger, who hopes to see the work finished by 2000 or 2001. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The Duryea-to-Wilkes-Barre trail will eventually be connected to three
other proposed trails in the county and then to a statewide network stretching
from the New York border to Philadelphia. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The rails-to-trails movement is on a roll across the United States as
community leaders realize that recreational opportunities can be as important
to economic development as highways, tax breaks and utilities. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "There are recreation benefits, scenic benefits and there's an increased
quality of life," said Thomas Sexton, executive director of the Pennsylvania
Rails to Trails Conservancy. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
