I was supposed to be on jury duty this week. I was excited about it, doing
my civic duty, participating in the system of American government as our
forefathers intended. Not to mention the added bonus of having the power to
determine if someone is innocent or guilty. Having someone's life, someone's
future put in my hands, so to speak. I had the power to send someone to jail! &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Now that is exciting. Then I got the postcard saying I was excused and did
not have to report. I do not know why I was excused, I did not ask to be.
Perhaps they sensed I was a little too excited about serving on a jury. Maybe
next time. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; I do know that no one is excused from enjoying some of these events
happening in the Greater Nanticoke Area. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

 The Rev. Bernard A. Toloczko, pastor of Holy Trinity Church, recently
presented Josephine and William Broski of Alden with a Papal Blessing,
bestowed on them by Pope John Paul II, on the occasion of their 50th wedding

Heart Mission Group's Divine Mercy Reparation Services today, at 3 p.m.

services will include Sunday Mass (fulfilling Sunday obligation), Divine Mercy
Holy Hour, Intercessory Rosary, Reparation Prayer during Exposition of the

 Penns Woods Girl Scout Council Neighborhood 17, which comprises Girl Scout
Troops in the Nanticoke/Newport Township area will meet at 6:30 p.m., Jan. 21,

registered adults are invited to attend. Girl Scout Week Activities will be
discussed. Residents are reminded that the Annual Girl Scout Cookie Sale is

 The Nanticoke Conservation Club will sponsor its 2nd Annual Ice Fishing

 Kelly Kuzminski, third grade student at K.M. Smith Elementary School,
Greater Nanticoke Area School District, was recently named "Student of the
Month" for November. Kelly was nominated for her helpfulness toward others.
This event is sponsored by the PTA to promote good citizenship at an early
age. Kelly was presented with a gift certificate to Waldenbooks in the Wyoming
Valley Mall which was donated by T.J. Construction of Glen Lyon. A certificate
with her name and picture was also displayed at the school. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

 Doris Gorka Bartuska, M.D., a graduate of Women's Medical College (now
Allegheny University of the Health Sciences, MCP) and Wilkes University, where
she received an Honorary Doctorate of Science has authored "The Diseases of
the Thyroid and Parathy roid" in the Textbook of Women's Health that was
published in 1998. Dr. Bartuska is the daughter of a past mayor of Nanticoke,
E. Edward Gorka and Sophie Gorka. Her sister, Alice Pawlowski, R.N., resides
in Nanticoke. Another brother, Paul Gorka is an artist in Philadelphia. Her
husband is Anthony Bartuska. They have six children and 19 grandchildren. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

 Students of the Greater Nanticoke Area High School Chapter of the Future
Business Leaders of America (FBLA) will be working together with the community
in an effort to raise funds for the National Make-A-Wish Foundation. The
students will be placing collection canisters in business throughout the
Greater Nanticoke Area. These monetary donations will assist in making a
child's dream come true. The FBLA encourages the community to contribute to
