`dawson's Creek' Has Enough Steam To Melt Most Viewers

WILKES-BARRE- Thirty years after his death, Martin Luther King Jr.
continues to inspire people, even in predominantly white regions like the
Wyoming Valley, where minorities make up less than 5 percent. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 On Sunday, roughly 300 people of different races came together at Wilkes
University's Dorothy Dickson Darte Center to pay tribute to the famous civil
rights leader. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; For more than 90 minutes, they heard the passionate re-enactment of King's
legendary "I Have a Dream" speech, pro-freedom songs, and readings
representing Christianity, Judaism and Islam. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 And by the end of the 18th annual celebration, the audience took center
stage, joining hands and swaying to "We Shall Overcome." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Gina Morrison, Wilkes' coordinator of Multicultural Affairs, welcomed the
audience by identifying King as the man who "gave us the hope to dream and the
dream of hope." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 After several proclamations and religious readings, Ron Felton, president
of the local NAACP, delivered an emphatic rendition of the "I Have a Dream"
speech, earning hearty applause from the appreciative audience. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Felton's strong words set the stage for Sharon Brittingham's performance of
"One Moment in Time." Brittingham told the crowd she chose to sing the piece
to illustrate that Dr. King's dream can only be captured one moment at a time. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Even the moments that present obstacles, she said, must be seized as
opportunities to succeed. Following her performance, Brittingham encouraged
everyone to stand and join hands for the final song, "We Shall Overcome." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Alan Zellner, chairman of the Martin Luther King Jr. Committee for Social
Justice, which sponsored the program, encouraged audience members to put their
words and thoughts into action. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "I do hope that the program presented today will move you to get involved
in the community." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 WBRE-TV news personality Lisa Braxton moderated the program, which also
featured musical performances by the Mt. Zion Baptist Youth Choir and the
First Presbyterian Church Children's Choir. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Also, winners of two youth contests were announced. The Annual Youth
Brotherhood Contest, co-sponsored by the King committee and The Times Leader,
asked students to submit drawings that illustrate Dr. King's philosophy of
peace, understanding and brotherhood. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 This year's winners were Mariah Raspen, kindergarten; Maureen Moran, second
grade; Amanda Austin, third grade; Rachel Adams, third grade; Eileen Casey,
fourth grade; Ann Moran, fourth grade; Mary Pat Osterweil, fourth grade;
Kathleen Moran, seventh grade; and Nicholas Caprari, 10th grade. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The Martin Luther King Jr. Youth Awards are presented annually to minority
high school students who have shown outstanding achievement, leadership and
community service. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 This year's winners were Michelle Fernandes, a junior at Bishop Hafey High
School; Remona Gray, a senior at Wyoming Seminary; Brandon Walker, a senior at
Meyers High School; Adam Za
