Road to equality passable but still far from smooth &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 This is a road over which millions of Negroes are travelling to find a new
sense of dignity. This same road has opened for all Americans a new era of
progress and hope. It has led to a new Civil Rights bill, and it will, I am
convinced, be widened and lengthened into a superhighway of justice as Negro
and white men in increasing numbers create alliances to overcome their common
problemsMartin Luther King Jr. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Nobel Prize &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Acceptance Speech &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Dec. 10, 1964 &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Thirty-three years later, on this Martin Luther King Jr. Day, we are still
struggling to build that highway envisioned by the civil rights leader, one of
the most powerful orators and leaders America will ever produce. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Sometimes it seems as if a dirt road is all we've been able to manage up to
now in Wyoming Valley, what with public servants accused of using racial
slurs, basketball fans allegedly taunting high school players with insensitive
songs and a school boy supposedly dressed as a Klansman for Halloween. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Hardly the "promised land" or the "dream" King envisioned in his most
famous speeches, full of Biblical allusion and boundless hope. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 But, reading King's speeches today, one is struck by his conviction that
the long, hard, but non-violent, work of racial equality was an ongoing
process that required the cooperation of all Americans. He spoke as often
about building the road as he did of reaching its promised end. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 So if on this day set aside to honor a slain, and great, American, we
acknowledge the evils of the past, the shortcomings of the present and the
hopes for the future, we should also celebrate the
