 Bravo to the Larksville Police Department on their Friday-night DUI &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; checkpoint. Any one of those drivers could have killed someone that night.

tow the DUI cars. He seems to be serving himself, not the boroughEditor's
note: Wallace said Petriga's Auto Service, of which he is an employee, has an
informal agreement dating back to the 1960s to be the borough's first-response
tower. He joined council in 1993. Borough Police Chief Tony Kopko requested
the truck's service at the checkpoint. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "They're basically just trying to start a little trouble," Wallace said of
the caller, who he believes he knows. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 In response to the article published in The Times Leader SAYSO column, Jan.
16, 1998, do we need a NAAWP "National Association of the Advancement of White
People." After reading this morning's front page of The Times Leader "King
holiday observed." I say, we desperately need it, just to stand on equal
grounds. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 I wanted to comment on the article about Joann Curley doing tasks in the
chapel. I think it's very timely. She and the cleric there are a match made in
heaven. God works in mysterious ways. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Please tell Steve Corbett thanks from the nurses for his support. Keep up
the good work, man. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 This is in response to the person who had an article in the SAYSO column on
January 22 about the 23-year-old young man working at the county prison. First
of all, at the age of 16, you can drive. At the age of 18, you graduate high
school and sometimes, if desired, you attend college. At the age of 18 you
vote. At the age of 18 you can enter the armed forces and put your life on the
line for your country. At the age of 21, you're of legal age to consume
alcohol, so why shouldn't this man have this job? What makes you think that it
was hand-picked for him? What makes you think he is not deserving of this job.
You sound like you believe these criminals and their sworn statements. You
must consider the sources and not condemn a young man and ruin his life. I'm
not saying a mistake was not made, it was most probable. But I do know how the
inmates stick together. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 I was just curious. With all the racial bias that's going on, what do the
stats show? Can The Times Leader get or does The Times Leader have the number
of black people in the federal, state and local criminal system? They make up
roughly 13 percent of the population. I was just curious what percent are
incarcerated or on probation. The same with the whites. Whites make up X
amount of population. What percentage of them are in the federal, state and
local prison system and probation system? While we're at it, what about
welfare? Can you get these figures? &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Editor's note: We're looking into it. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 I'm calling in support of Patricia Finan. What's a CEO to do? If all your
nurses go on strike, what are you supposed to do? You can't have orderlies and
candy stripers taking care of the patients. Keep up the good work, Ms. Finan. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Carolee Medico, please don't try to save the county taxpayers any money
because the puppet and puppeteer Crossin and Makowski will spend every penny
that you think you're trying to save for the taxpayers. Go for the max for
everything in your office that you need or have to have, because they will
take every penny of it and spend it. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 I could care less about the extramarital affairs of Bill Clinton. I
couldn't believe the national news' big story was that some other female in
his past tried or did or said whatever that had to do with sex. The vows
stated at the altar that have been unfortunately forgotten about by many
presidents prove that to be a great president, how one handles their sex life
means nothing as long as no laws of the land are broken. Look at Kennedy,
Roosevelt, Eisenhower, and even George Washington. All had affairs. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 To the caller who never heard of Slocum, bless you. You managed to get
Slocum Township mentioned in SAYSO. We residents agree there are more
newsworthy things happening in Pittston and Wilkes-Barre, but you must admit,
they are mostly unlawful and negative. We are glad you never heard of Slocum,
and hope people like you never do become acquainted with it. Unlike you, we
don't resort to name-calling. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 I'm calling from Pittston Township. I'm a taxpayer and I'd like to know
when the supervisors are going to pass a budget instead of passing the buck. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 I'm calling to ask what happened to the real press. I don't mean the press
we have today, but the real honest-to-God media. Not these two-bit, half-baked
muckrakers that you hire. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Last week, an American was elected president of Lithuania. That was in most
newspapers throughout the country except The Times Leader. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 I'm calling about the Freeland Junior High School. I saw in the paper where
Mrs. Pesock said that it's only a matter of six to 10 jobs. If you're out of
work, six to 10 jobs are a lot to the community. I know one thing, ever since
she got in and became board president, I'm sorry I talked my family into
voting for her during the election. Come the next election, I'll know what to
do. She's no different than the other ones. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 I just went for lunch in the new restaurant that opened up in Wilkes-Barre
Township on business Route 309. I was wondering if Mayor McGroarty could take
a lesson from Wilkes-Barre Township in how they're getting all these eateries
and businesses. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 I'm calling in regards to a column that was in last week's paper. A woman
wanted to know if the guards out at the prison have any other communications
besides telephone. I called in last week and said no, they didn't have any
other communications except a selected few, and it wasn't published. I don't
know if you are trying to protect somebody or what, but I've called several
times and my comments haven't been put in the paper. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 I'm calling in reference to the red stones all over Wilkes-Barre. They're
supposed to create friction between the road and your tires. It's a waste,
because they're all on the side of the road doing nothing. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 On Jan. 21, there was a homeless individual traveling through the Back
Mountain and he looked like an abominable snowman under a really dilapidated
carpet-type comforter trying to stay warm. He made his way for about a quarter
of a mile. Our police department takes an awful lot of grief and criticism,
but the Kingston Township Police got VISION involved. They picked him up about
5:30 p.m. and this individual was probably going to spend the worst nights of
his life. It was good to see they reacted properly, and they did a great job
