Get legislation to make diabetics' lives safer, healthier past Pa. Senate &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Pennsylvania's House Bill 656 insured that all insurance companies would
provide supplies, certified educators and self-management for diabetics. House &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Bill 656 passed the House of Representatives with an unanimous vote of
197-0 &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 on Oct. 27, 1997This could not have been enacted if the citizens of
Pennsylvania, certified diabetic educators, and advocates for the American
Diabetes Association did not call, write and meet with their state
Representatives. The 1 million Pennsylvanians who have diabetes and the
600,000 who have not yet been diagnosed will have the tools needed to take
better care of themselves. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 House Bill 656 will provide the supplies for testing of glucose levels,
certified educators to teach diabetics about their disease and self-management
for the diabetic. Good control of diabetes management will reduce the
complications that cause such things as heart disease, end-stage kidney
disease and amputations. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 House Bill 656 was with the Senate Banking and Insurance Committee for
approximately 3 months until it was voted out of committee on Feb. 3. The bill
has been lobbied by the insurance political action committee, which is why it
was bogged down. The bill could meet with disaster, while diabetes- a disease
for which there is no cure- continues to progress and spread. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
