If 1,000 career points is used as a measuring stick of success, just where
does Seton Catholic's Laine Sheerer fit in? After all, she long surpassed that
milestone and then doubled it to be named The Times Leader Athlete of the Week
for the period ending Sunday, Jan. 31Sheerer scored her 2,000th career point
on Thursday, Jan. 29, against West Side Tech. Needing 12 points, Sheerer
finished with 25. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "I wasn't sure how many points I needed," Sheerer said. "We were playing
West Side Tech and kept getting early steals and passes. I got it with 38
seconds left in the first half so it took a lot of pressure off me for the
rest of the game." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; And, as usual, put the pressure on a Seton opponent. Sheerer has been a
force since her freshman season and was The Times Leader Division III MVP last
season. She is pushing for the honor again this season, averaging a
division-leading 24.2 points per game. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Earlier in the week, Sheerer scored 18 points as Seton opened its lead in
Division III with a 75-70 victory against rival Bishop O'Reilly. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "Last year, I scored my 1,500th and everybody was saying `Go for 2,000,' "
Sheerer said. "I thought it was far off, but my teammates really helped me
accomplish it." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 While scoring is Sheerer's forte, she excels at all aspects of the game. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "Laine is not just a scorer," Seton coach Kathy Healey said. "She has a lot
of assists, over 1,000 rebounds and plays a total game. A lot of people think
the only thing she can do is score, but she can do a lot of things." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Other nominees were: &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Boys Basketball- Jack Peters of GAR, a 6-foot-2 junior forward, scored 64
points as the Grenadiers won three road games in a row to run their unbeaten
streak to nine games. He had a season-high 26 points in an overtime victory
over Bishop O'Reilly and added 22 points against Hanover Area, which was
unbeaten in second-half action. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Boys Swimming- Valley View's Chris Jones led his team to victories over
Hazleton Area on Jan. 26 and Berwick on Jan. 28. Against Berwick, Jones had
four first-place finishes, two relay and two individual. When Valley View
defeated Hazleton Area, Jones had a first-place finish in the 100-yard
butterfly, 200 freestyle, and the 400 freestyle relay. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Girls Swimming- Wyoming Seminary's Tricia Rado holds four of the
conference's top times. Rado had four first place finishes, two individual
(100 backstroke and 100 butterfly) and two relay (200 freestyle relay and 200
medley relay) in Seminary's Wednesday, Jan. 2
