district secretary shortly before Pesock was hired, but Pesock and other board
members must vote on a grievance connected to her hiring. The union that
represents district secretaries filed the grievance, saying the position was
never posted as mandated by the contract. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Mike the Mayor lies again and again. His long-awaited announcement was
another example of his political posturing. He promised to eliminate the
mercantile tax, but he had no intention of doing so. He tried to blame
council, but his new budget of over $6.5 million included an unnecessary SWAT
team, several additional police cars and other frivolous spending. But it does
not address the reduction of the mercantile tax. Admit it, Mike, you never had
intentions of fulfilling your promise to rid us of the mercantile tax. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; What happened to Mayor Marsicano's promise about the mercantile tax? Now
that he has the Three Stooges with him, that should be the number one
priority- not a SWAT team for 23,000 people in a small town. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 In the Jan. 14 edition of the Standard-Speaker, the caption reads, "Mayor
against county's 911 system for Hazleton." One paragraph states, "Marsicano
doesn't want to change the current system to 911 because the dispatchers and
police officers who answer the phones at City Hall know Hazleton." If this is
true, will Mayor Marsicano or someone at City Hall explain why one of these
dispatchers on the morning on Jan. 10, dispatched the city fire department to
an apartment fire located at the rear of the Delite Motel on North Church
Street in Hazle Township? According to other published reports, the city fire
department, after being dispatched, was first on scene, discovered the fire
located in Hazle Township, and was sent back to their stations before the
Hazle Township trucks arrived. All of this was taking place while seven
occupants of the building were trying to escape the building. The residents of
this city are paying $1.25 a month for the new and enhanced 911 system, and
will continue paying this fee, even if Mike Marsicano keeps the old system in
place, in order to appoint individuals to political jobs as dispatchers. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Editor's note: City Deputy Fire Chief Jerry Palermo said the city received
a tone for a structure fire at 1090 N. Church St. Although the address was a
Hazle Township location, Palermo said the department always responds once they
receive a tone (call). Palermo said all calls- whether 911 or direct fire
company calls- are dispatched through the city. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 I would like to know what action has been taken concerning the two West
Hazleton borough workers who were involved in drugs and alcohol? Are they
still working for the borough? What has borough council done regarding this
dangerous situation? &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Editor's note: Two borough Streets Department workers were arrested after
Hazleton police allegedly saw them causing a disturbance in the city. John
Woodring, a 12-year borough employee, was allegedly found with a small plastic
bag that contained a substance later proven to be marijuana. Woodring faces
drug charges, as well as charges of disorderly conduct and public drunkenness.
Gino Saullo was charged with disorderly conduct and public drunkenness. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Borough Solicitor Robert Powell said both men are still employed by the
borough. Powell said borough workers are covered under a union agreement, and
the borough intends to honor that agreement. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Powell pointed out that the men have not yet had their cases heard, but
even if they are judged guilty, there are still certain considerations that
must be taken into account with respect to the union. If either of the men are
found guilty, Powell said the borough will meet with union representatives to
decide what, if any, action will be taken. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 I'm calling about the article in the paper concerning Kline Township, that
the supervisors are gonna have pagers. I'd like to know, how do we get their
numbers in case we need them. Do we have to call the house, or will they put
them in the newspaper? It's very important, because a lot of times we try to
get them, and we get their answering machine and don't get no answers back. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Editor's note: Kline Township Supervisor Tony Morelli said the pager
numbers won't be published in the paper, but he stressed his phone number is
listed in the phone book as well as the numbers of the township garage and
secretary. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Morelli said figures that have been reported on the cost of township pagers
are inaccurate. He said the pagers for himself and fellow Supervisor Carmen
Cara cost $49.95 each plus a $12 monthly service fee. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Does Jake Ripa think we're going to forget about the letter he wrote
supporting a Republican two years ago for state representative? The letter I'm
referring to is the one for Tom Stish. We're Democrats. Jake will be lucky if
he can be elected dogcatcher in this town. He talks about someone being close
to (Democratic Leader) Bill DeWeese. What about him being so close to Mighty
Mike and Lou Rossi? &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 If Tony Morelli works out of town and needs a pager so he can be contacted
if there's an emergency in Kline Township, how could he be doing his job as
roadmaster? Shouldn't he be working at the township garage every day? &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Who in heaven's name taught those snowplow operators how to plow? Why
doesn't Tony Morelli go through the alleys and the side streets in Kelayres
and see the mess that they made out of them? People take care of their alleys,
but it seems like every time they come with the plow, they make a mess on the
side streets. They dig up all the grass. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 This is in regards to Mrs. Shepperson. When is that lady, the secretary at
McAdoo-Kelayres Elementary School, finally gonna get a raise? Her name is Mrs.
