EXETER- The Wyoming Area School Board received the results of a drug,
alcohol, and tobacco use study at Tuesday night's meeting. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Pam McDonald of the Wyoming Valley Drug and Alcohol Association said the
use of tobacco and alcohol among District students was slightly higher than
the national average. Also, the use of marijuana is lower and the use of other
drugs remains the same. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; The findings put Wyoming Area students near or below the national average
of substance abuse among teenagers. She said the school is succeeding in its
efforts to keep drugs out of district buildings. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "The school is doing an excellent job. These are great kids." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The survey of 170 tenth grade students at the Wyoming Area Secondary Center
was conducted in March. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 McDonald said all drugs, including alcohol, tend to be easier for Wyoming
Area students to find, compared to students across the country, the study
found. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "The real problem lies outside school where guidelines and rules are not
enforced," McDonald said. "This will send the most effective message to the
students and those who are supplying them." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 In other business, the School Board: &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Passed a motion to stop giving midterm and final exams to students. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Superintendent Joseph P. Casarella said the exams grades only reflect the
amount of time students spent cramming for them. He said grades should reflect
students' knowledge of the curriculum. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 P.J. Melvin, Secondary Center principal, said teachers use a month of class
time reviewing for the exams and he wants that time to be used for covering
new material. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
