ALEX SICHERMAN &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 December 1, 1998 &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Alex Sicherman, 85, of Netanya, Israel, and formerly of Wilkes-Barre, died
December 1 in Israel. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Born June 13, 1913, in Czechoslovakia, he was the son of the late Jacob and
Sarah Sicherman. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 During World War II, he served in both the Czech and Hungarian armies. He
was a survivor of the Holocaust. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 After the war, he moved to Italy where he met and married his wife, the
former Sylvia Leibovic. The couple immigrated to the United States, arriving
in New York in 1947. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 They settled in Exeter several years later and eventually moved to
Wilkes-Barre. In 1985 they retired to Netanya, Israel. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 He was employed in the grocery business for more than 50 years. He was
proprietor of the Academy Market, Wilkes-Barre, from 1964 until his retirement
in 1980. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 He was a member of Congregation Anshe Ahavas Achim, Exeter; Ohav Zedek
Synagogue, Wilkes-Barre, where he served on the High Holiday Choir; the Jewish
Community Center, Wyoming Valley; and Hachel Moshe Synagogue, Netanya, Israel. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Surviving, in addition to his wife of 53 years, are daughters, Susan
Balistocky, Los Angeles, Calif.; Sharon Shapira, Kibbutz Bet-Rimon, Israel;
Helene Sicherman Hellinger, Thousand Oaks, Calif.; son, Joel, Forty Fort;
sister, Anna, New York; six grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
