College football: Super seniors could change fortunes in 2021

Bulldogs show some bite in 73-61 win over No. 8 Villanova

EXETER – Wyoming Area’s Mario Amato blocked a three-point attempt at the buzzer to save the Warriors 39-36 victory over archrival Pittston Area in the annual Denisco/Tigue Memorial Game.

Morgan Janeski was named MVP for the Warriors after scoring 13 points and grabbing 16 rebouds.

Kallie Booth scored a game-high 21 points for Pittston Area and was named MVP for the Patriots.

Hazleton Area 64, Dallas 55

Brooke Boretski’s game-high 22 points and Julia Mrochko’s double-double led the way as the Lady Cougars outscored Dallas by ten points in the final quarter to pull out the 64-55 win in Wyoming Valley Conference girls basketball action.

Boretski knocked down a pair of three-pointers and also did damage from the charity stripe, knocking down eight free throws. Jaya Franek scored 13 points and had six steals, while Mrochko added 12 points and 12 rebounds in the win.

The Mountaineers had three scorers in double figures, led by Deanna Wallace with 15. Julia Kocher and Bella Hill added 10 points each.

Nanticoke Area 49, Wyoming Seminary 20

The Trojanettes used a 20-point second quarter outburst to pull away and coast to a comfortable win over Wyoming Seminary.

Riley Baird led Nanticoke with 15 points, including three three-pointers. Lauren Casey and Claire Aufiero added 12 and 7 points, respectively.

Seminary’s Abby Williams led the Blue Knights with five points.

Tunkhannock 45, Hanover Area 24

Maci Iddings led all scorers with 15 points as the Tunkhannock girls basketball team rolled to a victory over Hanover Area.

The Tigers ran out to an 18-2 lead after the first quarter and never looked back. Anna Williams added 10 points, including a pair of three-pointers. Eight different players got into the scoring column for Tunkhannock.

Hanover Area was paced by Madison Elick and Hanna Salwoski, who had eight points apiece.

Boys Basketball

Pittston Area 39, Wyoming Area 36

Matt Johnson hit a three-pointer with just three second left in the game to lift Pittston Area over host Wyoming Area.

Johnson finished with nine points on the night, while JJ Walsh had 13 to pace the Patriots.

Jake Greenfield led the Warriors with 16 points.

Dallas 55, Nanticoke Area 43

Austin Finarelli and Michael Cumbo each scored 17 points to lead the Mountaineers past Nanticoke Area on Sunday.

Dallas scored 39 of their 55 points in the second half to pull away from the Trojans.

Luke Myers led the way for Nanticoke with 16 points.

Women’s Ice Hockey

Chatham 4, Wilkes 1

Kendall Castro netted the Colonels’ only goal as they dropped the second leg of their weekend doubleheader with Chatham.

Castro’s goal came at the 12:12 mark of the third period, and was assisted by Valerie Koenig and Shauna Tubbs.

Wilkes drops to 0-2 (0-2 UCHC) with the loss, both losses coming against Chatham by identical 4-1 scores. The Colonels will be back in action against Manhattanville on Friday evening at 5 p.m. at the Toyota Sportsplex.
