BERWICK - Carleton Jones and Kristina Laubenstein - two runners racing in
Berwick for the first time - won overall honors in the 90th running of the
Berwick Marathon Association's 9-mile Run for the Diamonds on Thanksgiving
morning. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Jones, a 33-year-old from Columbus, Ohio, broke the tape in 44 minutes and
56 seconds, outdistancing Bill Frawley, 28, of Philadelphia, by 22 seconds. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; ``I couldn't be happier,'' said Jones, shortly after crossing the line.
``I knew, coming into the race, that I was in good shape for a flat 9-miler.
But I wasn't sure about a hilly 9-miler. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Jones was referring to the infamous 2-mile hill that starts at about the
2-mile mark of the race. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 ``That hill is certainly the most significant part of the race,'' said
Jones. ``It was brutal.'' &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Jones said that he knew that Frawley was a good uphill runner. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 He found that out when he reached the top of the hill and realized that
Frawley was still with him. In fact, Frawley was right on his heels. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 ``I was just hoping that he wasn't a better downhill runner than he was an
uphill runner,'' Jones said. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Then Jones made his move and opened up a lead which he was able to maintain
the rest of the way. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Jones was impressed with how well race organizers ran the event. And he was
happy about winning a diamond ring (the first seven male finishers won diamond
rings and the first seven female finishers won diamond pendants). &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 In fact, it was the diamond prize that attracted Laubenstein to Berwick. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 ``I've been telling everyone that I want to wear a diamond for Thanksgiving
dinner,'' said the 24-year-old from West Chester after crossing the line in 52
minutes and 21 seconds. ``A number of people had told me about the race. And I
thought that it would be a cool idea to run for a diamond prize.'' &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Actually, Laubenstein had some reservations about her chances of winning at
Berwick because of the notorious hill. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 ``Usually, hills aren't my strong point,'' she said. ``My coach had me
working on a hill in West Chester. But I really didn't do that well. So, I
wasn't encouraged. I just wanted to finish among the top seven and win a
diamond. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 But by the time Laubenstein crested the hill, she had built a 30-second
lead over Julie Bowers, 36, also from West Chester, who eventually finished
second, 1:32 behind. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Laubenstein was thrilled with the encouragement she got along the course
from spectators and likened the fan support with one of her favorite races in
Media (near West Chester). &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 When asked if she liked the race enough to return next year to defend her
