GAR softball upsets Hanover Area

SHICKSHINNY &#8212; Twice last year, Northwest fell just short against reigning WVC Division 3 baseball king Hanover Area. A one-run loss in the regular season and a one-run loss in the district playoffs.On Wednesday, the Rangers pulled it off.Northwest held the Hawkeyes to four hits and used a four-run fifth inning to win 5-3, ending Hanover Area&#8217;s incredible 43-game WVC regular season winning streak.It was the Hawkeyes&#8217; first loss in league play since May 10, 2011, when they fell 2-0 to Meyers.Logan Womelsdorf doubled and drove in two runs for the Rangers (3-1 WVC). Reese Godfrey struck out six in six innings for the win.Jake Peters went 2-for-3 for the Hawkeyes (3-1), including a home run in seventh.MMI Prep 1, Meyers 0Following two intentional walks, John Stish came through with an RBI single in the bottom of the 10th inning, scoring Cory Rogers for a dramatic win for the Preppers (1-1).MMI starter Kisan Patel gave up just two hits in nine innings with Rogers pitching the 10th for the win.Ryan Gilgallon also went nine scoreless innings for the Mohawks (1-3), striking out eight.Nanticoke 6, Holy Redeemer 2Joe Olszyk went the distance on the mound for the Trojans (3-1), striking out five and allowing just four hits. Kyle Pokrinchak finished 2-for-4 with a double while Mitch Romanowski drove in a pair.Jason Hoggarth and Matt Dacey each drove in a run for the Royals (3-2).Wyoming Valley West 16,Crestwood 1The surging Spartans (4-0) put up 11 runs before Crestwood came to bat en route to a four-inning win.Bill Gregory did the most damage, doubling three times and driving in three. Chris Lupole and Ryan Hogan each had three hits and two RBI.Derek Distasio doubled and scored for the Comets (2-2).Tunkhannock 6, Dallas 1Cody Brown went the distance for the Tigers (1-2), striking out five for the win. Brown (RBI) and Brian Muckin (2-3, two RBI) both doubled.Jordan McCrum drove in the lone run for the Mountaineers (1-2) while Charles Giacometti had two hits.Wyoming Area 6, Lake-Lehman 2Zach Lopatka struck out nine in 6.2 innings of work while going 3-for-4 with two RBI for the first-place Warriors (3-0). Nick Gushka doubled twice and drove in a run.Zach Brucher doubled and knocked in both runs for the Black Knights (1-2).Wyoming Seminary 7, GAR 5The Blue Knights scored twice in the top of the seventh to top the Grenadiers in a back-and-forth game.
