WBS Penguins’ win streak snapped in shootout loss to Syracuse

Police uncover ‘possible plot’ by militia to breach Capitol

Wilkes-Barre/Scranton spent most of Wednesday preventing shots from getting through to goaltender Max Lagace.
				No chance for that in the shootout.
				The Penguins held Syracuse to just 19 shots on goal through regulation and overtime, but the Crunch converted on both their attempts in the shootout to escape Mohegan Sun Arena with a 2-1 victory, snapping the Penguins&rsquo; three-game win streak.
				Syracuse also held a 2-1 edge in the shootout itself as Taylor Raddysh and Otto Somppi both beat Lagace to secure the win.
				Radim Zohorna opened the shootout with some slick stickhandling that ended with a top-shelf backhander over the glove of Crunch goalie Spencer Martin.
				But defenseman Cam Lee hit the post on the Penguins&rsquo; next attempt and, needing a goal to extend the game, Frederick Gaudreau missed the net when trying to pull a backhander around Martin.
				Defenseman Jon Lizotte had the lone goal in regulation for the Penguins (4-2-1-1), who opened the scoring early in the second period by winning a battle on the boards. A Zohorna pass hit traffic and trickled out toward the left point, where Lizotte charged in and fired a loose puck past Martin. Felix Robert also picked up an assist on the score.
				Syracuse would answer just 2:05 into the third period, though, as the Crunch generated an odd-man break off a turnover, and Cole Schwindt buried a pass from Declan McDonnell on a 2-on-1.
				It was one of the few scoring chances of the night for Syracuse, which managed just two shots on goal in the first period and four in the third.
				Wilkes-Barre/Scranton was unable to convert on five power-play opportunities, though the final chance lasted for only the final 30 seconds of overtime. The Penguins killed off all three penalties against them, including a full two-minute 4-on-3 situation in overtime with Lizotte in the box for boarding.
				Martin finished with 30 saves on 31 Penguins shots while Lagace stopped 18 of 19.

				&#8226; The new boss man was in town to check out the AHL club as Pittsburgh Penguins president of hockey operations Brian Burke shared a photo of himself with coach J.D. Forrest and staff from the arena.
				&rdquo;Feeling good about our prospects in Wilkes-Barre and both the skill and style of our coaching staff there,&rdquo; Burke wrote on Twitter along with the photo, which featured the AHL contingent all emulating Burke&rsquo;s trademark habit of untying his tie and leaving it hanging around his collar.
				Burke and new general manager Ron Hextall were hired to run the full organization back in February following the abrupt resignation of general manager Jim Rutherford. The Penguins did not previously have a president of hockey operations position before bringing aboard Burke, who had previously served as a president or GM of five other NHL franchises.
				&#8226; Gaudreau returned from a short stint with Pittsburgh earlier on Wednesday and was able to play against the Crunch.
				Captain Josh Currie and fellow forward Anthony Angello remain with Pittsburgh&rsquo;s taxi squad.
				&#8226; Wilkes-Barre/Scranton will now hit the road to face Binghamton at 7 p.m. Saturday.
