I see in the paper the Screen Actors Guild and The Screen Writers Guild are
building up to a big, fat strike. Sometime within a few months. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 You know what this means, don't you? We've been through this before. It was
terrible. Ten or 12 years ago we went through the most desolate months of my
life. A five-months-long strike! I remember reruns going back to
pre-television days. Charlie Chaplain, Harold Lloyd, Mary Pickford movies.
News clips from World War I. Old speeches by Calvin Coolidge. And now these
writers and these actors are going to do it to us again? &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; What are we going to do with the long, dark winter evenings if this strike
befalls us? (I'm now looking at a TV Guide). No more ``To Tell the Truth,''
``Hol~lywood Squares,'' ``Entertainment Tonight,'' ``King of Queens,''
``Daddio,'' ``Everybody Loves Raymond,'' ``Friends,'' ``Three Stooges,''
``Rivera Live,'' ``Girlfriends,'' ``This Old House,'' ``Rugrats,''
``Gilligan's Island,'' etc., etc. (and I'm only part way through Monday). &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Come to think about it, there was one very good thing that came out of the
old Hollywood strike - the one back in 1988 - and that was I got to read the
Bible - the whole book - from page one to page 807. Then page three to page
255. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 I had always been in awe of any acquaintance who could look me in the eye
and say, ``I once read the whole Bible!'' Thanks to the TV writers and actors
of a decade ago, I now join that group. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Oh, heck! when you're talking about the Bible, you gotta keep your story
straight. I confess that the pages in the Good Book where they ramble on about
Hezakiah begetting Rubicon and Jonsey begetting Smitty, I gotta say I read
awful fast. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 OK. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 I now have plans for how I'm going to handle the upcoming strike. No reruns
for me. I'm going to read something I've always wanted to read, and it's
something I've always wanted to brag about. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 I have a 29-volume set of books called The Funk and Wagnalls New
Encyclopedia. I am truly in love with these books. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Pick up any one of these tomes, crack it, and I guarantee within 30 seconds
you'll find something that will keep you reading for the rest of the day or
night. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 I want to be the only person - maybe in the whole world - who has read
every one of these wonder-filled books. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 I will have reached my life's highest point. All thanks to the guilds of
Hollywood's writers and actors. Thank you, folks. Keep up the good work. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Actors Strike Good Time To Hit The Books
