April Fronzoni of Larksville took a huge step closer to reaching her Olympic
dream recently when she earned a spot on the U.S. National Women's Field
Hockey Team. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Fronzoni, a sophomore at the University of Michigan who helped the
Wolverines win the NCAA Division I national championship last month, will
leave for South Africa on Dec. 28. She'll be there for almost two months, as
the Americans will go through six weeks of training and then participate in a
critical tournament there. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; The United States needs a strong finish at the Champions Challenge to keep
their hopes alive of earning a spot in the 2004 Summer Olympics in Greece.
There will be eight teams in the Champions Challenge, set for Feb. 9-17 in
Randburg, Johannesburg, South Africa. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Of the eight teams, the United States, India, Ireland and Lithuania will be
shooting for 2002 World Cup berths. The two highest finishers of those four
teams will get a spot in the World Cup, set for Nov. 26-Dec. 8, 2002, in
Perth, Australia. The Americans need to qualify for the World Cup to have a
chance to make the Olympics. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 A Wyoming Valley West graduate, Fronzoni was a member of the U.S. Under-21
Team that placed 13th in the Junior World Cup in Argentina in February. She
made the national team during a special tryout that took place shortly after
Michigan defeated the University of Maryland, 2-0, to win the national title. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Two days after winning the championship, Fronzoni got a call from Tracey
Belbin, coach of the women's national team. Fronzoni was asked if she'd be
willing to miss a week of school and commit to the next international event in
order to take part in the special tryout. Fronzoni agreed, and took part in
the sessions in Virginia Beach, Va. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Ten players went to the tryout, and Fronzoni and Kelli Smith of Maryland
were named to the National Team. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Twenty players will go with the U.S. National Team to train in South
Africa. When the competition starts, 16 players will dress for each contest. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Fronzoni is the daughter of John and Doreen Fronzoni of Larksville. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
