Greater Pittston little league season in full swing as boys major teams take the field

Philosophy professor nabs first in King’s 5K

PITTSTON &#8211; The rivalries are old. But the Pittston Area girls basketball team will try to revive those rivalries with a fun-filled day of basketball.Greater Pittstonians will come together on Sunday, April 26 for the Annual Alumni Legends Basketball Tournament at the Pittston Area High School. Games start at noon and run throughout the day, culminating with a teachers vs. teachers tournament.Alumni players from Pittston Area, Wyoming Area, Seton Catholic and Scranton Prep were invited to attend, and the day&#8217;s events are open to the public. Games will tip off at noon with Seton Catholic women against Wyoming Area.&#8220;It will be a really fun night,&#8221; Pittston Area coach Kathy Healey said. &#8220;Everyone comes together to help out our program. it will be a lot of fun.&#8221;All tournament participants will receive a T-shirt.Following the players&#8217; games, a special tournament will be played by teachers of the Pittston Area School District. First, the high school teachers will play the elementary school teachers at 4 p.m. At 5 p.m., the middle school teachers will battle the intermediate school teachers. The championship game will be held at 6 p.m.Also, students attending the game are encouraged to cheer for their respective schools. The school students with the most present will possibly win a prize, Healey said.Throughout the event, the Pittston Area Girls Basketball Booster Club will be raffling off baskets and the concession stand will be open. The club is asking for a donation as admission to the gym.Proceeds from the day will help the Pittston Area girls basketball team attend a camp at the University of North Carolina. Last year, the Patriots visited Notre Dame.&#8220;I think it&#8217;s amazing to take the kids, especially the girls,&#8221; Healey said. &#8220;Our players met a lot of players who played in the national championship game for Notre dame. It&#8217;s a great bonding experience.&#8221;Healey also said the time away let the team see a different side of the coaching staff.&#8220;It lets us put our hair down,&#8221; she said.During one game last season at Notre Dame, Pittston Area&#8217;s Liz Waleski drilled seven or eight threes. At that time, Jewell Loyd, who was just drafted No. 1 by Seattle in the 2015 WNBA Draft, called Irish coach Muffet McGraw to check it out.&#8220;That is a great experience for them,&#8221; Healey said. &#8220;It also helps us get ready for the season.&#8221;The club is still looking for sponsorships for the tournament.
