Kudos for aiding Train Day project
 
On behalf of Zebra Communications at Wilkes University, we would like to thank the Wilkes-Barre community for helping our community kickoff to restore Engine #4385, which is now officially named the Vulcan &ldquo;Iron Hammer.&rdquo;
Several downtown businesses contributed, including Millennium Tanning Salon, Don Michael&rsquo;s Salon, Movies 14, Tony D&rsquo;s, Boscov&rsquo;s department store and Carol&rsquo;s Deli. We send a special thanks to Barnes &amp; Noble bookstore and Jannuzzi&rsquo;s Pizza for hosting our events at their establishments on Vulcan Train Day on Nov. 10.
More than 300 area children entered the &ldquo;Color the Engine&rdquo; and &ldquo;Name Engine #4385&rdquo; contests. Our thanks go to teachers at Dan Flood Elementary, Heights-Murray Elementary, St. Nicholas/St. Mary&rsquo;s and students in the REACH program for entering the contests.
Barnes &amp; Noble hosted a number of successful activities, including a celebrity reading hour featuring WBRE-TV&rsquo;s Lyndall Stout, Shadoe Steele from radio station WKRZ, Todd Vonderheid of the Greater Wilkes-Barre Chamber of Business and Industry, Wilkes University First Lady Patty Gilmour and Wilkes&rsquo; students. 
The looks on the children&rsquo;s faces as these community leaders read their favorite train books aloud was priceless.
Jannuzzi&rsquo;s Pizza hosted the Chew-Chew Bubble Gum contest that drew more than 20 bubble-blowers. And it wasn&rsquo;t just for the children, either! Winners ranged from 5 to 42 years of age.
&ldquo;Vulcan Train Day&rdquo; was the first phase of the community campaign. Vulcan Pride Ltd. is accepting donations to help raise $200,000 to restore the Vulcan &ldquo;Iron Hammer&rdquo; engine and bring a piece of Wilkes-Barre history back to the area in running condition. 
We still have several Vulcan Iron Works T-shirts available at $10 each. Proceeds benefit the Vulcan Pride Restoration effort.

TL&rsquo;s health clinic donation praised
Dear Times Leader Publisher Richard Connor:
The Churches of St. Casimir, St. John the Baptist and St. John the Evangelist thank you for your most generous donation of $225 from the newspaper&rsquo;s 100th anniversary campaign to be used to help subsidize our Free Health Clinic for the uninsured poor.
Your gift will help us provide for the needs of the poor of our community. Two other clinics in Wilkes-Barre recently closed due to lack of staff and finances. We have ours up and running to help those who are in need of medical attention.
We are grateful that you are willing to support our many wonderful ministries.
We will remember you and your staff in our grateful prayers. It was a wonderful party.

A mere thank you seems insufficient to express the gratitude of everyone at Wyoming Valley Children&rsquo;s Association for your generous donation to our agency.
The impact of The Times Leader&rsquo;s $100,000 donation drive on our local community will be felt for years to come. You not only have donated much-needed funds to many local nonprofits, you have set the standard for other businesses and individuals in the community.
WVCA will use your donation to serve area children who have physical and neurological disabilities, including speech delays. The funds will help to provide physical, occupational and speech therapy as well as preschool education to youngsters who have autism, Down syndrome, cerebral palsy and a host of other conditions that cause developmental delays and speech disorders.
On behalf of the children and families we serve, I applaud your dedication to the community.
