First Posted: 1/20/2015 An executive with deep experience running newspapers across Pennsylvania has been tapped to lead Civitas Media, parent of the Times Leader Media Group.
Ralph Martin has been named Civitas Media&#8217;s CEO. He previously was CEO of Trib Total Media in Pittsburgh, which publishes the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review and more than 25 other newspapers across the state.
Martin starts his new job next week. He was recruited by Philadelphia-based Versa Capital Management, which owns Civitas Media. Martin replaces Michael Bush, who resigned last year.
&#8220;Ralph&#8217;s deep community newspaper experience and his ability to grow businesses strategically and financially will bring the right leadership to Civitas as the organization focuses on delivering the best local news and advertising solutions in its many markets,&#8221; said Gregory Segall, chairman of the board of Civitas Media and CEO of Versa. &#8220;Ralph also brings a reputation for working well on both the editorial and advertising sides of the business and for creating a team environment.&#8221;
Martin joined Trib Total Media in 2003 and became its president in 2005. In an interview with the Tribune-Review, Martin said he began considering other opportunities following the July 4 death of his boss, Dick Scaife.
&#8220;I have truly enjoyed my 12 years at Trib Total Media,&#8221; he told the newspaper. &#8220;My relationship with Dick Scaife was one of the best and most rewarding with a publisher in my career.&#8221;
Before leading Trib Total Media, Martin helped develop and expand Community Newspaper Holdings Inc. as its president. CNHI owns newspapers across the country, including The Daily Item in Sunbury and The Danville News.
Martin chairs the Pennsylvania NewsMedia Association, of which the Times Leader is a member.
Civitas Media, which is based in Davidson, North Carolina, publishes more than 100 newspapers in 12 states. Its Pennsylvania portfolio includes the Times Leader, Sunday Dispatch, Dallas Post, Abington Journal, Weekender and NEPA Energy Journal.
