Letter to the Editor: Wilkes-Barre Council would benefit with Beth Gilbert

Hi, it&#8217;s me, Earth. Want to thank you for giving me a day.Of course, the sun gets a day every week. I know it&#8217;s important and all, but you don&#8217;t live there. Couldn&#8217;t if you tried.For that matter, the moon gets a day a week too, (look up the origin of Monday if you don&#8217;t already know). Can&#8217;t live there either, at least not without taking a chunk of me along. Heck, even Saturn has a day.But by all means, give them a day a week for two millennia, then give me one day a year for 40-some years. That sounds fair.Sorry, didn&#8217;t mean to whine sour grapes.But can you blame me? You wouldn&#8217;t even have days to name or celebrate without the old &#8220;third rock.&#8221; And I&#8217;m not just talking life-sustaining stuff like gravity, oxygen and water. I&#8217;m saying you literally wouldn&#8217;t have days, or years, or seasons. It&#8217;s that whole rotating, orbiting, tilting on my axis thing.Not to rob the sun of its due. I know I&#8217;d be an overgrown asteroid without it, though I don&#8217;t look forward to the day it goes all super nova and incinerates me like a bread crumb in a bonfire. I get it, natural order and all, but seriously: Show off much?I&#8217;m not saying I deserve a day a week, but I think there&#8217;s a pretty good case for more than a day a year. After all, I&#8217;m unlike any other heavenly body in your scientific lexicon. You don&#8217;t just know I exist; you know my highs and lows, you know what I&#8217;m made of.I&#8217;m the actual definition of salt of the earth and down to earth, the literal ground beneath your feet and wind beneath your wings.I&#8217;m the sky you shoot for, your new horizon, your light at the end of the tunnel, your greener grass and field of dreams. I&#8217;m what lies just around the river bend and somewhere over the rainbow. I&#8217;m the reason the sun will come up tomorrow, the moon will hit your eye like a big pizza pie, and tonight, tonight won&#8217;t be just any night.I&#8217;m not bragging, just reminding you how close we are: Real amigos, comrades, BFFs, symbiotic even &#8212; though maybe you take a little more than you give. I&#8217;m usually okay with that. Despite our differences, I love you guys. You crack me up. No, I mean it literally, what with dynamite, drills, earth moving equipment the size of a suburb, and that whole fracking thing.I&#8217;m just saying that, maybe, after all the park cleaning, tree planting and kumbaya singing today, maybe you keep me in the back of your mind. Put the cigarette in the ash tray instead of out the car window, buy a reusable water bottle, walk to the mini-mart, stuff like that.After all, it&#8217;s more for you than for me. Truth is, I&#8217;ll survive pretty much anything you do. I may change, but I&#8217;m good until that super nova thing.Bottom line: When you talk about &#8220;saving the planet,&#8221; you&#8217;re really just talking about saving yourselves.
