Luzerne County faces choices with Hazleton properties

First Posted: 5/5/2014 BEAR CREEK TWP. &#8212; The township will investigate replacing what were supposed to be removable speed bumps with permanent bumps made of asphalt, the supervisors said Monday.
In response to a resident&#8217;s questions about the speed bumps, which were placed originally because residents near the golf course were concerned about the speed of vehicles entering and exiting the course, Supervisor Jim Smith said that the bumps that were thought to be removable were so difficult to remove that they were damaged.
They were subsequently damaged at least twice more by trucks plowing the road, Smith said. The supervisors said they would ask the township engineers about replacing the bumps with mounds of asphalt that will be easier to plow over.
In other road-related matters, Smith said that the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation has been contacted after numerous complaints about anti-skid material left alongside state Route 115. He also said the township has begun patching potholes and is sweeping the roads.
The supervisors also addressed a resident complaint about ashes being dumped on a property across the street from his home. Solicitor Bill Vinsko said that as far as township codes go, there is a difference between something that is unsightly and something that is posing a hazard, and the township would have to look at the situation to see whether there was anything the township could do about the situation.
In other business, the board:
-Noted that work has resumed on the Trailwood Park project.
-Reported that there should be some word within the next month about whether the township will receive a gaming grant to be used for a consolidated public works building.
-Addressed a resident&#8217;s concern about construction trucks parked in the Little League field lot, creating a potential hazard as children and cars both try to move through the lot. The township will identify the construction company and ask them about the situation.
-Reminded residents that although there is currently no burning ban, conditions are right for wildfires and urged common sense and caution with any burning.
