&#8226; Dude86: Do away with Black History Month. It&#8217;s 2014. When these people stop thinking it&#8217;s the color of the skin, and not their own actions and demeanor, the better society will be. No one is born racist. When you live life and see it every day, that could make you a racist. You don&#8217;t have to act like your mother when she raised you, white or black.
&#8226; twhuff: The very existence of a special month every year separates that class from the rest of society. This is segregation, not integration.
&#8226; jjfedup: I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character. But the present-day blacks continue to judge people by the color of their skin. Who are the real racists in this country?
&#8226; Vera: The conclusion you reach is an overly broad generalization and fails the reality test. Several of my co-workers are black and brown skinned, and not a single one holds such an attitude. Not even remotely.
&#8226; valleywithoutabrain: I really don&#8217;t know what to say. I am a WASP who was raised by a racist &#8220;Archie Bunker&#8221; father and still foster some of the negative racist attitudes I was brought up with; but thankfully over the years I have actually grown and have made some progress in being able to accept others for who and what they are and no longer will blame an entire race/creed/religion for the actions of a few. It is easy to point fingers and crucify everyone associated with that race/creed/religion, and I suppose that is why the simplest minds (and there are many of them posting here) make the most noise regarding issues such as these.
&#8226; Ralph_Edmund: Bullseye. You got it exactly right. Some people never make the transition out of the childhood brainwashing.
BACKYARD CHICKENS
&#8226; Deborah Williams: The county is great at wasting money, going after a poor woman who wants the benefits of fresh eggs rather then God knows what she would get in the store. Let the woman be, and we should all get chickens for farm-fresh eggs.
&#8226; forclosure: Think of the chicken issue this way. If you are selling your home next door to a neighbor with a bunch of stinky clucking chickens, it will devalue your property, causing the county to increase taxes to compensate for depreciating property values. The plan is kill this area as fast as you can, so that the county can declare bankruptcy and extinguish the $400 million debt. A little convoluted, but it&#8217;s a plan.
&#8226; larrydallas: I find it ironic that these Turkeys are concerned with chickens.
&#8226; Richard V: The county, with chickens in backyards, for sure joined the the rest of the nation in looking like a Third World nation. Wouldn&#8217;t want them by my house. Next, hogs in backyards. Then come the cows. How about sheep? Let that ordinance stand and get to the real problems of this county.
&#8226; Carl Schiel: (The regulation) should be changed. Large cities like Chicago actually allow (chickens) within city limits, as long as it&#8217;s less than 3 hens (no roosters). Chickens can eat food scraps and make good pets. Chickens are a species that heavily rely upon humans for survival. They won&#8217;t breed out of control like cats and dogs in this valley.
&#8226; Hughy Lewis: People should always have the choice of gardening their own foods and raising a few chickens for eggs. No one should be forced to buy corporate-produced eggs or chickens. With this economy, people should be encouraged to produce what foods they can.
&#8226; Commander13: When you no longer have the right to produce your own food on your own property liberty is dead. Land of the free!
&#8226; urnotdave: I think it is OK to have chickens running around. If there aren&#8217;t any roosters, they should be fine and not bother the neighbors. &#8230; Roosters are territorial and love to let everyone in the neighborhood know that they own a certain area, so they are noisy and super loud. It is an all-day thing, happening first in the morning. So in many ways, they are a problem just as a dog constantly barking is a problem.
&#8226; Tom Sawyer: Anyone not familiar with the raising of chickens needs to know several issues that come to mind and one is noise, especially in the morning. Other issues are keeping the chickens on the property, if they are free-roaming, and chickens attract birds of prey that have been known to substitute neighboring pets if the occasion warranted. Raising chickens also raises the possibility of attracting other rodents, insects, mice, lice, etc. Unless someone has at least 2 acres, approving this is not a good idea.
&#8226; kingstonguy9: Do you feel it is OK to raise (feed daily) an uncontrolled colony of feral cats? Even well-fed feral cats kill untold numbers of birds daily. A half dozen chickens in your heavily taxed backyard is really not a problem. The spread of feral cat colonies is a major problem not being addressed as the major health issue it is.
