The parks&#8217; conditions and vitality will continue to reflect the involvement &#8211; or lack of it &#8211; of area residents like you. Do you appreciate the beauty, charm and value of these undeveloped spaces? Will you visit them for picnics, walks and other outdoor pursuits?
In order to maintain and improve them, will you volunteer?
As Moon Lake Park slid into disrepair in recent years, calls arose for volunteers to form a sort of care-taking corps to perform routine upkeep. To our knowledge, that initiative didn&#8217;t take root. In 2010, a group calling itself Friends of Moon Lake Park did rally, largely in reaction to perceived threats that natural gas drilling would be approved there and spoil the territory. Drilling firms, however, found the county&#8217;s geology unconducive to gas exploration and headed to more lucrative spots.
As recently as this spring, some volunteers descended on the Plymouth Township park for a weekend cleanup. But the key to keeping Moon Lake as well as Seven Tubs in presentable shape is to involve lots of committed people in a sustained effort.
The state&#8217;s park system encourages volunteer involvement. Moon Lake and Seven Tubs are not yet part of the state system, but a Luzerne County Council majority voted last week to transfer the properties. These parks, while under county control, were public assets. They will remain public assets.
The public, therefore, should play a role in ensuring these assets shine.
