‘Hundred-Foot Journey’ goes on a so-so trip

First Posted: 11/3/2014 The Wyoming Valley Conference has been in a state drought.
No boys soccer team from the league has won a game in the state tournament since Wyoming Valley West defeated Wilson in 2006. That year, the Spartans lost a heart-breaker in overtime in the quarterfinals to the eventual state champion.
This year, the WVC has doubled its chances at picking up a win as two teams from the league have advanced to the state tournament for the first time since 2002. Coughlin and Wyoming Seminary will both play today as the state tournament gets underway.
The unbeaten Crusaders (20-0) face Lewisburg at 6:30 p.m. at Central Columbia High School in a Class 2A match, while Wyoming Seminary (18-2) plays Bloomsburg at 5 p.m. at Lake-Lehman High School in Class A.
&#8220;With how times are now, you have to be kinda a one sport guy. I think that&#8217;s the difference coming from kids in other parts of the state,&#8221; Coughlin coach Rob Havard said. &#8220;They have players who play all year round. On our roster, we have that now. A lot of our players are playing travel teams that are better than the high school teams.&#8221;
Havard&#8217;s Crusaders take on the Green Dragons (20-1) in a rematch of a state match in the same round played two years ago. Lewisburg is coming off its fourth District 4 title in the past five seasons.
Like Coughlin, Lewisburg also has a stingy defense. The Green Dragons have given up just six goals all season and has outscored opponents 66-6 while posting 11 shutouts. Coughlin has allowed just two goals this season with 18 shutouts. Lewisburg is giving up an average of just over 3 shots per game for opposing teams. Coughlin did that in its last two district games.
Junior Joey Bhangdia leads the team&#8217;s offense with a team-high 14 goals and a team-high nine assists a year after scoring 20 goals, while Max Reed (nine goals) and Michael Fox (six) also get in on the act.
&#8220;I think the team they have this year is better,&#8221; Havard said. &#8220;It&#8217;s a different formation than they played two years ago. We know that they are always well organized, well coached and in that position to be in the state tournament year in and year out. But we also know that we can play with them.&#8221;
The Blue Knights are in the state tournament coming off their first district title since 2002. They don&#8217;t rely on just one player to do the scoring either. Three different Seminary players had at least nine goals this season, and in a 4-0 win over Montrose to claim the District 2 Class A title, four different players scored.
Geronimo Maspero leads the team with 13 goals and eight assists during the regular season, while Andriy Molchanov posted 11 goals and five assists and Dominick Bohl tallied nine goals and four assists. The Sem defense is no joke either posting a perfect game against Montrose not allowing any shots on goal.
They posted nine shutouts this season, including three in the district tournament. In 11 other games, the Blue Knights allowed just one score to opponents. In fact, the only time all season that Sem allowed more than one goal in a match was in a 5-0 loss to Coughlin.
&#8220;They&#8217;re outside left back (Bohl) is great. Bohl is definitely one of the top backs in the league,&#8221; Havard said about Sem&#8217;s defense. &#8220;They&#8217;re organized. They execute a gameplan even though they didn&#8217;t give up many goals they defended from front to back.&#8221;
Bloomsburg (17-5) has a potent offense similar to the Blue Knights by scoring 90 goals this season led by junior Lance Klingler, who has tallied 25 goals and six assists. Klingler isn&#8217;t the only weapon for the Panthers as Jonathan Nixon put up 22 goals and six assists and Cade Harmon adds 13 goals and five assists into the mix.
The Panthers defense appears to have some holes and is not as strong as the Blue Knights&#8217; allowing 36 goals in 22 games with five shutouts.
