20 years ago - 1995Recently, Lake-Lehman ninth graders in language art classes learned the steps to publishing a book. For a graded project, Miss Purcell asked 90 students to choose and appropriate subject they were interested in to develop a book. They started by developing an idea and proceeded to choose a person to be in charge of editing their book. To make the experience more exciting, Miss Purcell turned the project into a contest with cash prizes. The six judges comprised of three students and three faculty members chose the following: first place, Michelle Boltz with a book of poetry called Straight from the Heart; second place, Kristina O&#8217;Kane&#8217;s Kids All Over The World; and third place, Tara Haughney with a children&#8217;s book illustrated with her own line drawings.Students from Mrs. Finnerty&#8217;s and Mrs. Belles&#8217; classrooms of the Lake-Lehman Middle School recently presented an assortment of children&#8217;s books to the pediatrics department at the Nesbitt Memorial Hospital campus of Wyoming Valley Health Care System. Participating students are: Adrienne Harris, Aron Carmen, Jason Harris, Lucy Dunham, David Wolfe, John Savakinis, James Brennan, Rhonda Shotwell, Rhonda Forester, Vicky Trundle, Shane White, Charles Adams and Rhonda Yaple.30 years ago - 1985Heather Anne Brody, age 8, daughter of Douglas and Millie Brody, Dallas, was recently chosen Pennsylvania&#8217;s Little Miss at the America&#8217;s Little Miss Pageant held in Essington, Pa. Heather competed against girls across the entire state of Pa. and was judged on her beauty, poise, personality, smile, eye contact, style and fit of attire. In addition to winning the title in the 6-8 age division, Heather was also named Most Photogenic and won first place in the Party dress and Sportswear competitions; she brought home five trophies in all.Three Cadette and Senior Girl Scout Troops from Penns Woods Girl Scout Council held a joint Court of Awards at College Misericordia recently. Troops 622, 631 and 634 from Shavertown/Trucksville Neighborhood 25 combined to award the recognitions earned by their members during the year just passed. The Gold Award, Girl Scouting&#8217;s highest award, was presented to Mary Elizabeth Craft, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Olney Craft, Jr., Shavertown.Six members of a Dallas Brownie Troop headed by Lauren Chimock recently toured the Geisinger Family Health Center in the Dallas Shopping Xenter. The youngsters explored an examination room, the Laboratory, and discussed x-rays, first aid and poison safety with Dr. Eugene Gorski. Brownies are: Debbie Gregor, Carra Giordina, Michelle Boyle, Katie Moylan, Amy Beardsworth and Gina Stortz.40 years ago - 1975Lenny Martin, Lake-Lehman High School Senior, has been named to the West team for the UNICO Club&#8217;s annual all-star East-West football classic this August at Wilkes-Barre stadium. The 5-10, 150 lb. senior is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Szewczyk. He plays half back and defensive back and worked under varsity coach Richard Gorgone.Cheryl Wagner is the most valuable girl athlete at Lake-Lehman High School, her coaches and instructors say. Cheryl, the daughter of Cheryl Wagner and the late Jeff Wagner, will graduate this week. In her senior year, she was a member of the District II Lake-Lehman championship hockey team and holds the record in goals for District II public high school with a total of 24. She also starred on the basketball and softball teams. 50 years ago - 1965Den 5 of Cub Scout Pack 281, Dallas, recently enjoyed a &#8220;Hobo Outing.&#8221; The boys earned electives by building an outdoor lean-to and fireplace where they cooked their own meal. Taking part were Ricky Earl, John Earl, Jackie Coon, Jack Cobleigh, Willie Perry, Dana Parrish, Billy Perry, Douglas, Debbie Jo and Charles Wasserott.The Junior Prom of Dallas Senior High School proved to be one of the highlights of the 1964-65 season. Several hundred students, handsome in their prom finery, danced to the music of the Rhythm Aces in the gymnasium which was beautifully decorated following a colorful motif of &#8220;Rhapsody in Blue.&#8221; The big event of the evening was the crowning of Miss Patricia Martin, a junior, as Prom Queen.60 years ago - 1955Westmoreland&#8217;s valedictorian and salutatorian were Barbara Mame Hirleman and Robert Dallas Shepherd. Miss Hirleman, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Budd Hirleman, Shavertown, has been on the Dal-King staff four years; play committee two years; dance committee, two; May day, four years. She was homeroom representative in second and third years; in the chorus, third and fourth; band and orchestra, second, third and fourth years. Robert Shepherd is the son of Mr. and Mrs. R.D. Shepherd, Trucksville. He was on the Dal-King staff four years; dance committee four; play committee in junior and senior years; chorus the last two years.Brownie Troop 152, St. Therese&#8217;s, Shavertown, held a combined Mother-daughter tea and fly-up ceremony last week in St. Therese&#8217;s Auditorium. Mr. and Mrs. John Girvan this week donated a fine milk bar to the young folks and Benjamin Rood of Harveys Lake a thirty foot bowling alley. George Williams gave a piano.The Home Economics classes of Dallas Borough High School will present their annual fashion Show and Tea on Tuesday evening in the high school auditorium. The Fashion Show will include four parts: Maypole Misses (aprons and jumpers); Fun &#8216;N Frolic (sportswear); Mid Season (suits); and Maytime (dresses). Betty and Margaret Jones will sing between parts. Marilyn Ohlman, Jean Schooley, Jeanette Brown and Peggy Kocher will pour tea after the show.
