Letter to the Editor: Unionizing in 2015 can improve lives of nation’s workers and their families

<p>Did you know that one of the most talented Hollywood filmmakers of the 1950s and 1960s, a man who directed such stars as Michael Caine, Rod Steiger and Richard Burton, hailed from Northeastern Pennsylvania?</p><p>Cy Endfield was born and raised on Scranton&#8217;s Washington Avenue before heading off to Yale University and, eventually, a tenure with Orson Welles&#8217; Mercury Theater.</p><p>With the disbanding of Welles&#8217; company, following the failure of 1942&#8217;s &#8220;The Magnificent Ambersons,&#8221; Endfield became a contract director at MGM where he oversaw many shorts, including the final films in the &#8220;Our Gang&#8221; series.</p><p>Following the release of the noir classic &#8220;The Underworld Story&#8221; (1950), Endfield&#8217;s career was on the upswing. But not long afterwards, he found himself targeted by Sen. Joseph McCarthy&#8217;s anti-Communist House Un-American Activities Committee.</p><p>Rather than name names, Endfield relocated to England where he worked for many years under different aliases. His first picture in the U.K was &#8220;The Limping Man&#8221; (1953, Alpha, unrated, $10), which was shot on the cheap with fellow blacklistee Lloyd Bridges.</p><p>Bridges stars in the film as a former American soldier who flies to England with hopes of rekindling a romance with a British actress (Moira Lister).</p><p>But no sooner does Bridges touch down at London&#8217;s Heathrow Airport than a fellow passenger is shot to death by a mysterious assassin. A number of officers from Scotland Yard are interested in Bridges after the dead man turns out to have a strange connection with Lister.</p><p>Endfield not only brings a smooth sophistication to this murder mystery but he uncorks a twist ending that makes you re-think everything you&#8217;ve seen.</p><p>Even at his lowest ebb, Endfield was capable of coming up aces.</p><style>
