Abington Heights finished last season with a 12-2 record and fell in the first round of the District 2 Class AAA playoffs to Coughlin.
The Comets return senior outside hitter Kevin Schumacher, junior middle hitter Griffin Joyce and junior outside hitter Joe Dietzer.
Senior Mike Fitzpatrick is expected to start at middle hitter, junior Jeremy Critchley will start at libero, and senior Sean Salmon will be the starting setter.
Sophomore Reece Yarns is expected to get some varsity playing time at defensive specialist/outside hitter.
Abington Heights must replace outside hitters Jake Roba and Eric Washo and setter Mike Pettinato.
&#8220;I think if we&#8217;re able to control the ball and limit mistakes on our side of the court, I think we&#8217;ll have a pretty good chance of winning a lot of games,&#8221; Comets head coach Jamie Spangler said. &#8220;I think we can definitely take the (Lackawanna) league title if we play within ourselves and not make stupid mistakes.
&#8220;We&#8217;d like to win a couple games in districts, too,&#8221; he said.
Spangler expects Western Wayne and Mountain View to provide the toughest competition in the Lackawanna League.
The Comets opened their season Tuesday at Forest City.
Lackawanna Trail
Lackawanna Trail finished last season with an 8-7 record and missed out on the district playoffs.
The Lions return senior setter Ryan Dill, senior defensive specialist/middle hitter Dylan Simon, along with junior outside hitter Aidan Holmes.
Senior outside hitter Phil Sawicki and senior middle hitter Collin Walsh are expected to move into the starting lineup. Senior Brad Lochen is also expected to contribute as an opposite hitter.
Lackawanna Trail must replace middle hitter Devin Walsh, setter/hitter Richard Pollack, outside hitter Wyatt Cooper, defensive specialist Dave Brown, and middle hitter Matt Huertas
&#8220;Since we&#8217;re a very small team, of nine, our whole purpose this year is to just get the skills down,&#8221; Lions head coach Susan Renna said. &#8220;Our goal is to make it to districts. I have seven seniors and I would love for them to be able to hang a (2014) banner on the wall their last year.&#8221;
Renna expects Western Wayne and Mountain View to provide the toughest competition in the Lackawanna League.
