George Schaetzle, of Pittston, expected to be doing a lot of whittling after retiring from the Lehigh Valley Railroad. Employed from 1903 to 1953, he&#8217;d seen many changes to railroading, like the introduction to the new steam engines and the first use of air brakes. His co-workers and friends Don Brady, Tom McAndrew, Louis Dougherty, Art Driesbaugh, H.E. Duggan, William Shaughnessy, James Blume and Clarence Shea gathered to see him off on his last day. There was one thing, though, that most did not know about George. He had one other hobby that filled his free time - tatting. The technique of knotting crochet thread is used to make lace edging as well as doilies, collars and other decorative pieces. He&#8217;d learned to do it on a bet he&#8217;d made to win a box of cigars. After that, he had mastered pillow cases and handkerchiefs.
Chiampi Motors in West Pittston advertised that &#8220;more and more people are trying the Hudson Hornet&#8221; due to its new Flight-Line Styling and Twin H-Power. The Hornet was produced by the Hudson Motor Car Company of Detroit, Michigan, between 1951 and 1954, then by American Motors between 1955 and 1957. Hudson was the first automobile manufacturer to get involved in stock car racing. The Hornet dominated the circuit in the early 1950s.

Mrs. Robert McGeehan, a member of the Committee for State Constitutional Revision, addressed a group of members of the Pittston Rotary Club stating, &#8220;The Pennsylvania state constitution was adequate in post-Civil War but needed to be updated from the horse and buggy days to the new space age.&#8221; The meeting hoped to inspire help in a movement to assemble a convention to address 123 proposed changes to the state constitution. The revisions, not addressed until 1968, created the Philadelphia Municipal Court and authorized the creation of community courts, giving the Supreme Court rule-making power and creating a review board to deal with judicial discipline. It permitted home rule by municipalities, created a reapportionment commission to operate every 10 years after census and made improvements to taxation. The revisions also required the governor and lieutenant governor to run together, and made them eligible for a second term. Pennsylvania has had five constitutions during its statehood 1776, 1790, 1838, 1874, and 1968.
Dr. Lewis C. Druffner Sr. retired as chief of the medical and surgical staff at Taylor Hospital. A testimonial dinner in honor of Dr. Druffner was held at the Greenwood Inn in Moosic. Attending were Mrs. Theodore Marmo, Mrs. Milton Evans, Dr. and Mrs. Lewis Druffner Jr., Dr. Milton M. Evans, Dr. William M. Howell, Henry Ventre, Dr. Stanley Vitosky, Dr. Alexander M. Muchak, Rev. A.P. Conniff, Theodore Marmo, Tony Palma, P.A. Duffy, Beatrice Carden R.N. Bessie Meillen and Mrs. Irene Fitt.
Arnold Embleton of Inkerman, retired railroad conductor, wasn&#8217;t doing a bad thing when he broke into the Lehigh Valley Railroad Station in 1963. He&#8217;d remembered the old railroad photos hanging on the walls and he feared them being lost forever as demolition of the building neared. Embleton took it upon himself to make sure the photos were brought to safety.

Congressman Dan Flood used his extensive influence to locate a solid brass bell from an abandoned 1900 vintage New York Central Steam locomotive in a Chicago Scrap Yard to fulfill a request from Pittston Area faculty members Angelo Marcino, Vince Washak and Mary Frances Loftus. The bell was refurbished in Avoca and then donated by the congressman to the Pittston Area faculty members, students and football team.

Joe Tavaglione, John Brogna, Samuel Miceli, Vincent Savarino, Alex Podsadlik, Lem Phillips, Richard Mogavero, George Parrick Joseph Loda, Arthur Bartoli, Martin Damiano, and Clarence Maisano gathered at Veterans Memorial Park in Pittston to present a flag to Joan Senschak dedicated to the memory of her husband, George. Senchak, of Pittston, served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
