First Posted: 2/18/2014 The Pittston Memorial Library, West Pittston Library and Wyoming Free Library are holding a &#8220;Little Miss and Mister Library&#8221; contest.
Children between the ages of 7-10 and who are members of the Pittston Memorial Library, the West Pittston Library or the Wyoming Free Library are eligible. The applicants are required to submit an essay to their local library entitled, &#8220;What I like about my library.&#8221;
The essay deadline is Monday, March 31, and the winners will be announced on Monday, April 14. Submissions can be dropped off at the three participating libraries.
The winners will participate in various community events, the Cherry Blossom Festival, Memorial Day Parade and the Tomato Festival.
Pittston Library
The Pittston Memorial Library is located at 47 Broad St., Pittston.
 To date, the Pittston Memorial Library has found over $1,000 for library patrons through a free search of the PA Unclaimed Property Database. The next meeting is from 5 to 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 20. Search the database for possible unclaimed money and print the forms needed to claim all for free. This is a perfect opportunity for members of the elderly population who may not have computer access to find money that they may not have realized they are due.
Teen Reading Lounge will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 1 and Saturday, March 22. Call the library to register.
A book sale sponsored by the Friends will be from 2 to 6 p.m. on Thursday, March 27 in the basement of the library.
The Pittston Memorial Library Presents &#8220;The World&#8217;s Greatest Elvis, Shawn Klush&#8221; at 8 p.m. on Saturday, April 26 at the Theatre at Lackawanna College. VIP (meet/greet and refreshments) and general admission tickets are available by calling 570-955-1455.
The Pittston Kiwanis is hosting a Spring Fling (food, beverage, baskets and entertainment) to benefit the Friends of the Pittston Library from 6 to 9 p.m. on Saturday, March 22 at the Susquehanna Brewing Company. Donation is $20 and tickets are available at the library.
&#8220;Black Lung: The Discovery, Uses and Stories of Anthracite Mining In Northeastern Pennsylvania&#8221; by John &#8220;Dick&#8221; Zborovian is on sale at the Pittston Memorial Library for $15 with proceeds going to the Library.
There are over 30 board games currently at the library. Children and adults are more than welcome to come by anytime to pick a game from the shelf and play in the library.
Movie Night for Kids will be at 5 p.m. on Thursday, March 27 for children ages 5 to 11. Call the library to register.
The March book club for adults will meet at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, March 31. &#8220;No Country For Old Men&#8221; will be read and copies can be picked up at the front desk.
Read to specially-trained therapy dogs at 10 a.m. on Saturday, March 8. Call the library to register.
The Lego Club is at 4 p.m. every Monday. Children age 5 and up are welcome to enjoy lego free play. The library provides the Legos.
The Science Club will meet at 4 p.m. on Thursday, March 20. Children age 7 and up are welcome. Call to register.
The Crochet Club meets at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, and at 5 p.m on Thursday.
Beginner Computer classes are held at 10 a.m. every Thursday. Call the library to register.
The library has a sign-up for the next story time session. The club meets in the morning on Tuesday and Wednesday and have an all-age family story time at 4 p.m. on Wednesdays. Sign up at the front desk or call the library for more information.
The Friends of the Pittston Memorial Library will hold their monthly meeting at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 24 in the library board room. The agenda will include planning of the &#8220;Spring Fling&#8221; being held on Saturday, March 22, the Spring Book Sale scheduled for Thursday, Thursday, March 27, the St.Patrick&#8217;s Day Parade and the conversion of the basement library into a book store. Maria Capolarella Montante will preside. New members are welcome.
The Grandparents Support Group is being held at noon on the fourth Monday of each month.
TAG, the Teen Advisory Group will hold a meeting at 5:30 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 24 and Thursday, March 13.
West Pittston

An Oral History Workshop will be held at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 25. Learn how to preserve your loved ones&#8217; story of growing up locally in the valley for future generations. Members of the Greater Pittston Historical Society will present some interesting Oral Histories as well as offer some instruction to document your own. Registration is recommended for this free program.
The West Pittston Library Book Club meets at 6:45 p.m. on the first Tuesday of each month. Grab a cup of coffee and join the WPL Book Club in an informal discussion of member-selected books. There&#8217;s no need to purchase the books; just ask at the circulation desk for an available copy of the month&#8217;s selection. March&#8217;s selection is &#8220;Night Circus&#8221; by Erin Morgenstern. April&#8217;s selection is &#8220;Round House&#8221; by Louise Erdich. May&#8217;s selection is &#8220;Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Coast Trail&#8221; by Cheryl Strayed. Registration is recommended for this free program.
The Book Discussion will meet at 6 p.m. on Thursday, March 6. John Dziak of the Greater Pittston Historical Society will discuss &#8220;Black Lung: The Discovery, Uses and Stories of Anthracite Mining in Northeastern Pennsylvania&#8221; written by local historian John Zborovian. Registration is recommended for this free program.
The Dog and Baby Connection is at 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 8. Your two-legged and four-legged babies have met. Now what? Join Beth Mattei-Miller for the first national program that prepares families with dogs for life with baby. She&#8217;ll provide tips, tricks and suggestions. Registration is required for this free program.
Laflin Library
The Laflin Public Library is located at 47 Laflin Road, Laflin. Library hours are Tuesday through Friday, 3 to 6:30 p.m. and Saturday 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The library&#8217;s phone number is 570-654-3323.
Thomas the Train day is at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 25. Join in for stories, coloring sheets and more. Bring your own train to run the tracks or use a train that will be at the library.
Wyoming Library
The library will continue the Season 4 discussion of Downton Abbey. The discussion group will meet from 4 to 5 p.m. every Monday. The discussion will end on Monday, Feb. 24.
The library will hold a discussion group during the upcoming season of Game of Thrones. The first discussion will be held from 4 to 5 p.m. on Monday, April 7.
The Furry Tails Reading Program meets every third Saturday from 10 to 11 a.m. Please call the library to register.
The Wyoming Free Library Crafty Kids Club is held fromt 3:30 to 5 p.m. every Wednesday, discovering new crafting techniques: learn to sew, and create unique gifts for family and friends. For kids ages 7 through 12.
The Coupon Crew will meet at 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 8. The group will talk about coupons and how to save money.
The LEGO Club of the Wyoming Free Library will meet from 11 a.m. to noon on the following Saturdays: March 1 and April 12. This program is free and suitable for children 5 and older. Younger siblings are welcome as well. Registration is required.
Family Movie Time will be held from noon to 2 p.m. on one Saturday a month. The following movies will be shown: March 15 - Monsters vs. Aliens: Supersonic Ride; April 12 - Jungle Book 2. The program is free; space is limited so please call to register.

The library will have Fill-A-Bag-Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. every Friday. People can fill up a bag of books from the lobby for $3 per bag. Plastic bags are available in the library.
The Friends of the Wyoming Free Library Book Shop will begin sales again with a Spring Clearance Sale on Saturday, March 15. The bookshop is located next door to the library at the Wyoming United Methodist Church. There will be different item featured for each sale. All sales will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Friends are also accepting book donations for the book shop with the exception of the following: Reference, School Books, Readers Digest, and Magazines.
The Friends of the Wyoming Free Library hold meetings on the first Monday of each month at 6 p.m., and the third Wednesday of each month at 11 a.m. The Friends are currently planning a Recruitment Night and a Banana Festival. The meetings for the Banana Festival planning will be held each Thursday at 2:30 p.m.
The Friends Book Club meets at noon on the second Wednesday of each month. They are reading &#8220;Angel&#8221; by Barbara Taylor Bradford. The new book will be discussed at each meeting. Brown bag your lunch as we discuss the book.
