<p>COLUMBUS, Ohio &#8212; They were numbers Penn State would have taken in a heartbeat before arriving at the Horseshoe.</p><p>The Nittany Lions ran for nearly 200 yards against the nation&#8217;s No. 1 team. Christian Hackenberg attempted just four passes in the second half.</p><p>Not exactly the signals of a four-touchdown loss.</p><p>But they are signals of an offensive line that continues to struggle in pass protection and ultimately limit what the offense can do, especially against top-caliber opponents like Ohio State.</p><p>While the stats do show that Hackenberg was 3 for 4 for 64 yards and a touchdown after halftime, those numbers don&#8217;t show that he was sacked five more times, including twice on key fourth-down tries in Buckeyes territory.</p><p>&#8220;The offensive line needs to play better,&#8221; tackle Andrew Nelson said. &#8220;Protect Hack better. &#8230; Everything starts with the offensive line. At the end of the day, the offensive line, and myself in particular, needs to play better.&#8221;</p><p>The coaches didn&#8217;t disagree. That&#8217;s why they benched both starting guards in the second half with Brian Gaia not playing a snap in the final two quarters and Brendan Mahon only getting a handful.</p><p>Neither player appeared to be injured. Gaia stood next to offensive line coach Herb Hand on the sideline with the rest of the reserve linemen. Mahon was in the media room after the game.</p><p>They were replaced by Wendy Laurent and Derek Dowrey, respectively. Dowrey had split some time at left guard with Mahon the last two weeks before stepping in for Gaia on the right side on Saturday. Laurent has been the Lions&#8217; No. 2 center for the past two years but had worked at guard before in practice.</p><p>Paris Palmer and Nelson manned the tackle spots the entire way with Angelo Mangiro returning at center after sitting out a week with an injury.</p><p>Certainly if there&#8217;s one thing that helps cover up the warts up front, it&#8217;s Saquon Barkley.</p><p>The true freshman showed no ill effects from an ankle injury that sidelined him for the 10 quarters prior to the showdown with the Buckeyes, gashing the national champs for 194 yards on 26 carries. He also had a 44-yard touchdown negated by a holding call against Gaia.</p><p>At times, the blocking in front of him doesn&#8217;t even seem to matter.</p><p>&#8220;That guy,&#8221; Nelson said, &#8220;is a great player. And he&#8217;s going to do great things for Penn State. We&#8217;re very thankful for him. He&#8217;s a make-it-right guy. You may not get everything blocked exactly correctly, but he can make you right. Make people miss. Definitely a really explosive player.&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;He adds another element to make plays after contact,&#8221; Hackenberg said. &#8220;He did a great job of that all day. That helped a lot of things get going for us.&#8221;</p><p><strong>Swap sparks Bucks</strong></p><p>Some of the loudest boos of the night at Ohio Stadium &#8212; aside from a few personal foul flags that went against the Buckeyes &#8212; were reserved for Cardale Jones.</p><p>The quarterback that improbably led the Bucks to wins over Wisconsin, Alabama and Oregon to win the national title, struggled against the Lions, going 9 of 15 for 84 yards.</p><p>It wasn&#8217;t until J.T. Barrett &#8212; and on a few occasions, quarterback-turned-wideout Braxton Miller &#8212; took over the offense that the Buckeyes exploded, scoring three touchdowns in the second quarter.</p><p>&#8220;There&#8217;s no doubt that was different,&#8221; Lions coach James Franklin said. &#8220;I thought we were actually playing pretty good when it was a traditional drop-back quarterback, traditional running game, traditional go-through-your-progressions.</p><p>&#8220;Now Barrett comes in, and the speed and the athleticism that he has not only beats you with his arm but also beats you with his legs. The combination of (tailback Ezekiel Elliott, Barrett and Miller), those three guys just played a different speed. That definitely factored in, there&#8217;s no doubt about it.&#8221;</p><p>Ohio State fans weren&#8217;t alone in wondering why Jones continues to get the starting nod.</p><p>Buckeyes coach Urban Meyer said he wasn&#8217;t ready to make any firm decisions on his quarterback rotation just yet but admitted that the running ability of Barrett and Miller was what swung the game.</p><p>&#8220;The option and quarterback run and equalizers,&#8221; Meyer said. &#8220;You have to have equalizers in offensive football. If it&#8217;s a downfield throw, which they weren&#8217;t giving it to us, we try to field them. But when you can read a defender and (the quarterback) pulls it back and goes, it&#8217;s some big plays from them.&#8221;</p><p><strong>Up next</strong></p><p>For the first time this season, the Lions will be taking on a team coming off a bye week. And they&#8217;ll have to be ready for just about anything.</p><p>That&#8217;s because the opponent is Maryland, which fired coach Randy Edsall last Sunday, giving offensive coordinator Mike Locksley an extra week to make changes in his new role as interim coach.</p><p>The Terrapins are 2-4 on the season and have used three different quarterbacks who have combined to lead the nation in interceptions. It will be Perry Hills under center against the Lions. Hills is a bigger, stronger version of Indiana&#8217;s Zander Diamont, who is far more of a threat to run than he is to throw.</p><p>Saturday&#8217;s game will not be on Maryland&#8217;s campus but at the Baltimore Ravens&#8217; M&amp;T Bank Stadium. Kickoff will be at 3:30 p.m. with ESPN carrying the broadcast.</p><style>
